Gertrude Lilian Entwisle

Managing Real Estate Broker with Fathom Realty PB00068179

Gertrude Lilian Entwisle was born in Swinton, Greater Manchester, England back in 1892. She graduated from the Manchester High School for Girls and continued her education at the University of Manchester but she never graduated. in 1915, she went to work at British Westinghouse working on the design of the DC motor.

She never married and was allowed to stay on the condition that she never was to wear trousers (my have times changed). She spent most of her career working on the design, manufacturing and cost of the AC and DC machines while attending the Manchester College of Science and Technology. She retired after 39 years as an electrical design engineer.

What you may not know about Gertrude is that she was the first British woman to retire from a complete career in industry as a professional engineer; the first female engineer to work at British Westinghouse and the first female student, graduate and associate member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, later the Institution of Electrical Engineers.

Good morning, James... love ending my week reading about another inspirational woman!

As for the wearing of trousers... while I was growing up we never wore trousers to church; when I went to college in 1966, no jeans were allowed in classrooms; no trousers were worn with a sorority pin. When I entered the work world in 1971... women did not wear trousers to the office. As you said... my how times have changed.

Go get em Gertrude! I remember in 8th grade being "allowed" to wear pants to school. It had to be a pantsuit in 1970's that was polyester and NO AIRCONDITION in a south Louisiana school. All of that changed, to slacks and so on.

My thoughts turned to the "conditional" employment where apparently not wearing pants tends to free ideas more readily. Bully for you Gertrude!

When I first starting working after college, I worked at a bank and all women were expected to wear dresses or skirts.

I witnessed the transformation and evolution including some unfortunate pants-suites.

Bravo, another brilliant and accomplished woman leading the way. Dress codes have thankfully changed from what I have seen, but no doubt there are still some exceptions.

Hi James,
Many things have changed since Gertrude's entry into the field of engineering, hasn't it? I have a granddaughter that is an engineer at one of the water power companies in our state. She does wear trousers.

Dear James,

We lose a lot of capacity by not allowing certain people to study particular fields or work in certain professions. A lot of Zweisteins may have gone by the wayside over the years from this practice.
