Grateful for Inspiring Teachers and Coaches

Thanksgiving time is the perfect time to look back and appreciate all those special people that inspired me along my journey growing up. Some I remember their names clearly. Others I remember what and why they inspired me. Either way I am so thankful for them seeing the gifts I had to bring to the party.

2nd grade. I had a teacher that realized I could read far beyond my age group. She was always encouraging me to read 'older kids' books. Of course I was one of the those kids that read a lot of books every week so I was all in! She also had me give verbal book reports in front of the class which was scary at first but I got used to it.

5th grade.  Sister Ann Lorette. She realized that I loved precision and math and encouraged me to take on projects to better suit my likes and to keep me motivated and busy with projects. She even taught all of the kids to needlepoint (or something like that) and I loved it. Don't think I ever have done it since but it taught me how to do it right the first time! Or else....

Freshman year at boarding school. I swore up and down I did not want to be a secretary ( I wanted to be like my Dad (the Boss). My Dad worked out a deal with the nuns that I would take sewing for one year in lieu of all the secretary type classes. Ugh I hated it - at first. The nun must have been 80 years old (not really). After a short period of time I figured out she was the smartest, kindest and STRICTEST nun on campus. Holy smokes she sure taught me how to sew extremely well. And we're talking pendelton wools with every plaid matching perfectly for those sewers out there! Again...do it right the first time lesson! I loved that nun to pieces!!

Mrs Fiefield and Father Murphy. Mrs Fiefield was the Head of Athletics and Father Murphy was the basketball coach. In that school it was required that you excel in academics as well as sports.  Which was fine with me as I grew up playing sports with my 5 brothers - Piece of cake for me! One day Mrs Fiefield asked me if I'd be interested in being the captain of a team.  YES! I would.....and I was off to the races in volleyball, basketball and tennis. She and  Father Brian taught me so much about encouraging others and being a leader. And I got pretty good at all those sports as well.

Well I could go on but I don't want to drag this out t00 far......there were so many other teachers/coaches that went over and above in my growing up years. And for that, I am truly grateful!

Oh wait.....senior year. One more I promise! Dr Ken B, my economics teacher. Honestly I had no idea of what economics was back them. But I figured out that I loved the class because Dr Ken was incredibly encouraging. I distinctly remember him saying to me, you are amazing at economics and it could be a career path for you. Well it didn't turn out that way but to this day I watch the financial markets closely. Thank you Dr Ken!

As we move closer to Thanksgiving I look forward to feeling and being grateful for it all. And especially for Debe Maxwell, CRS and Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland for hosting my favorite contest of the year! Thank you Ladies!

Hi Barbara Todaro don't know about a champion!!  I do know how lucky I was to have teachers that inspired me on a deeper level - to bring it all out. Pretty special people and I wish I could thank them now but they've long passed away.

Hi Nina Hollander agreed! I imagine most of us had 'those' special teachers that made such a huge different in us, believed in our abilities and saw what others didn't see.  Huge gift, isn't it!!

Hi Candice A. Donofrio great stories.  Some teachers don't know or see the abilities some kids have, like you and so misread what's going on. My Dad was like you and could figure anything out as he saw patterns as well. Amazing ability!!  So did you quit ditching class!!!  As for the pre-licensing instructor.....so wrong!!  Kind of funny looking back, isn't it!  Thanks for the feature!!

Hi Brian England I think so too!  Albeit today I'd want my kids to go to a charter school or private school as not sure as to what they're all learning or not learning in public schools now.  I didn't realize back then how lucky I was to go to private schools. And BTW thanks for reblogging!

Hi Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD I could have gone on and on as there were so many great teachers along the way, especially in high school and college. Where would we all be without these amazing inspiring mentors!!

Hi Grant Schneider most of them I didn't get a chance to say thank you! One I met with while I was in Mexico studying and she just happened to be in town.  I was over the top excited to see her and tell her how much I appreciated her in high school. She was one heck of a math teacher and a very happy person to boot!

Charita Cadenhead I agree teachers deserve so much credit. I have a friend that used to be in the corporate world who decided to teach kids that didn't have a lot of inspiration going on around them.  To hear her stories of how the kids changed over time is such a gift. She is truly a kind and caring lady.

Hi Lottie Kendall funny that you said that!!  I was one of those kids that loved learning and the big kid in me still loves learning new stuff. That means those teacher did a great job inspiring me!! As for socially wise....that took a bit of time but there were a few teachers/coaches that really helped me figure that part out much better.

Morning Anna

I did not like school, mainly because my parents were not there to help me understand the basics.  Don't get me wrong, they were loving parents, they just never made it past the third grade.  My best subject was history, I guess that's why I post about it every day

If one, speaking out of the depths of their very soul said these two very words: THANK YOU...no other prayers would be required. Investing in the soul is no myth but a word to the wise...Oh that all should hear & obey this calling.....

Hi Kris Collis, Associate Broker I see a strong level of education in charter schools or private schools (not all). Kids are being taught history, listening to different view points and why America is a great country. What's not to like about that!

Hi James Dray I've have talked with folks that didn't make it past 3, 4 or 5th grade. They were needed on the farm. Some of my great uncles didn't get through grade school for that reason. Like your parents, good parents but values were just different back then.  Now....I think college aged kids should think about not spending thousands and thousands, go in debt for years and get a pretty much worthless degree.  Real estate perhaps!!  Look how well you turned out!! And keep writing your history posts....I love learning about history!

Oh the gift the elders bring to children enrolled in the private and/or charter schools. That's such a cute photo of you with you braid! Facially, you haven't changed much and you're still recognizable! Love your smile and bright eyes too! These are great snippets of the learning you received from some of your best mentors, coaches, and teachers. You definitely have a lot to be grateful for! All of them that you shared (including your parents) made sure you received a proper education. It's clear to me, you were very determined to shine and succeed!

Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, GRI, WLS you were one special girl right from the start and what a journey you have taken! I never had brothers (just 4 sisters) but in looking back at friends who did have brothers, I always admired the balance my girlfriends w/brothers had and how different they began to think earlier in life and in my opinion were better problem solvers than me or other girls I knew who only had sisters close in age.

I do believe children are a product of their environment and education has a profound effect on outcomes - at least according to the 80/20 rule. Your trip down memory lane was entertaining too! I also went to private schools but the only domestic skill I learned was cooking in my Sophomore year. I was involved (or should I say enrolled) in athletics but spent most of my time on the bleachers where my feet didn't touch the floor and I waited, and waited, and waited to participate. I was lucky I got to play a little Volley Ball and Basketball, but only a little bit. This is a great entry and I really enjoyed reading more about you!
