CONTROL AND INSPIRATION - YOU NEED BOTH

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

In your real estate brokerage or any other organization you need management and leadership. While management organizes and controls, leadership charts the way, innovates, and inspires the organization to new heights.  As a leader your role is to navigate your organization or your team through the uncertainties. Sometimes the good and necessary management skills such as planning, directing and controlling create roadblocks because they are missing the inspirational leadership.

Sometimes heads of organizations spend too much of the time on controls.  When this happens inspiration and innovation falters.  For example, a newer person with new ideas might be answered with,  "that probably won't work, we tried that before, or this is the way we have to do it."

You may be a great manager, but you may fail as a leader. We can influence the process through which people recognize our leadership by creating an environment where people will join “the team” because they see the purpose. They understand the vision and the “big picture” as well as the values of the organization for which they work. Today’s fast-moving business environment demands that the effective leader be both, a well-organized administrator and highly adept in understanding people’s basic needs and behavior in the workplace. Be open with your communication. Share the vision and values but also share your goals. Also, share organizational results. A Head of a company who keeps results secret breeds distrust. The most successful businesses and business leaders conduct “open book” management. This is the way to gain trust and commitment.

We must engage our employees because the business environment is always changing and evolving and the way we do business and communicate must also change with the environment. There are findings in older Gallop engagement surveys that are still important but other points relating to economy and generations have begun to show up. For example, the desire of employees to have the opportunity to do what they do best is still important as is being recognized for a job well done.

A study released in October 2012 conducted by MSW Research and Dale Carnegie Training surveyed 1500 employees nationally. Results showed only 29% of employees are fully engaged while 26% are disengaged.   Bottom line is that in all these surveys many employees listed similar key drivers for engagement, such as their relationship with their immediate supervisor, belief in senior leadership, and pride in working for the company. That needs to be addressed by business leaders. Disengaged team members do not contribute and worse, they could alienate your customers.

Careless unengaged team members can ruin a business by driving away customers. The team should know how to measure loyalty, how to wow customers, and how to deliver on and exceed expectations.   The right people need to be placed in the right positions. Jim Collins talks about this when he says, “Get the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right seats”. Then focus of the vision, the goals, train, develop, and engage.

Team Working on A Project

Leaders who navigate the team and create engaged members who will be rewarded with loyal customers and more business success. Make that a goal for your real estate business.  For a similar post on our web site see THE ROLE OF A LEADER.

Grant,

Like Dorie Dillard CRS GRI ABR this post deserves a gold star, and the last paragraph is very powerful as is the Jim Collins quote.  Even if one is a solopreneur, you need to get the right people on the bus and in the right seats, those who take photos, videos, printers, etc...A

I have always been a fan of this theory - “Get the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right seats.”

...and when I really understood & embraced the theory in my own business, I was able to soar!

Great post and wonderful information, Grant!

Wayne - yes, we must start with the right people.

Sheri - agreed, those are the things to focus on rather than how everything is done.

Brian - just enough control but no more.

Dorie - inspiration and charting the course.  Thank you.

Sharon - Thank you.

Joan - that is the only way to grow, let go.

Ron and Alexandra - that is certainly true for solopreneurs.  They have collaboration teams.  Thank you.

George - it is an important balancing act.

Nina - it is a great point by Jim Collins and the right people also should want to ride with you.

Debb and Bernie - thanks so much to all of you.

Will - I would be honored if you re blog.

Debe - you must have the right people with you.

Wow. This is so true.  In real estate many believe that the top sales person makes a natural leader, but there is so much more than leadership (much of which you've covered).  The one that I detest and "oh that won't work" simply based on a belief that it won't work for whatever reason. Thank you for writing this.

Charita - that is for sure.  Just because you are a great performer does not mean you will be able to lead and inspire.

Hi Grant- loved what you had to say. Leaders need to be able to convey the mission and vision of the company and inspire their team members when they do so.

Gallup publishes an annual report on employee engagement.  Over the last decade 25-30% are actively engaged, 50-40% are engaged and 25-30% are actively disengaged. This as you noted goes back to both leadership and management.
