Gratitude 3.0: Main Street USA and Small Business Love

By

One morning this week I got sucked into the Buzzfeednews-rabbit hole. Perhaps you know the kind.. one attention-grabbing headline (which this blog post has not, I know) that leads you to click on another, and another, and another .. until you either shut your browser in horror because You won't believe it! or laughing because These really were hilarious

It was both of the above for me. This rabbit hole was called Amazon and its fake reviews, and it got me thinking that now would be a good of a time as ever to delete my account. NIKE is doing it, too, and more are to follow I am sure.

I don't use it much anymore. It used to be a handy resource to quickly and conveniently deliver birthday presents to the family overseas instead of paying exorbitant shipping fees. Nowadays, our present is time spend together to create memories as we did in Prague this year.

I have found Amazon prices too high, the reviews fake, and I'd much rather support my local Main Street(s) and pile on the Small Business Love, than let's say China's economy.

So I dedicate my 3rd post during this year's season of gratitude to Main Street USA, and all the small, locally-owned businesses that make shopping personal, fun, unique, and authentic. I am grateful for my local Main Street(s). I am grateful for the shop owners who risk it all to make a dream come true. I am grateful for their bravery, their passion, resiliency, and expertise. I am grateful for the community leaders who support their vision. I am grateful for the investors who understand the value of revitalizing Main Streets and backing small businesses. I am grateful for the local residents and visitors who prefer shopping on Main Street (again), who turn Girls Night Out, and Small Business Saturday into a family affair.

I am grateful for my local Main Streets of Ellicott City, Annapolis, New Market, Frederick,... and I am grateful for my circle of small business owners who I have met by chance, or got to help buy or sell a home, who have impressed me with their service, their product, their dedication, and passion. I know I can trust their opinion. And you know that my review of them is not a scam. When I recommend a small business to you, it's because I have first hand experience and know that they are the best. They are neither fake nor flake. They deliver. They care. And they are right here in mine and your community.

Your support means the world to them, and us. Your support means, your hard earned cash helps local families survive and thrive, it stays in your community, and contributes to the quality of life in the same.

Gratitude 3.0: Main Street USA and Small Business Love - let's all pile it on this Holiday season!

What a thoughtful post. Obviously my real estate business is not dependent on Amazon, but it is the bulk of my book business. One of my goals for 2020 is to make them less of a source and open up other avenues. Thanks for the encouragement!

I love your goal Mimi Foster. Perhaps you remember that I did some translation work for a romance novel writer? It gave me a tiny glimpse of the inside operations of Amazon, and I was shocked how few cents the authors actually make! So here's to you and finding new successful avenues for your book business!

glad you got a good laugh! I was sitting at my desk, laughing out loud, too. Too good to not share.

And they keep changing their policies to take more and more of the pie. Didn't there used to be laws against monopolies?

That sounds like such a wonderful place to shop and I would much rather support small businesses than big businesses.

Whenever possible, I choose a local small business over big box retailer Grant. Shopping on Main Street is much more enjoyable, too.

Our local Main Streets are beautiful, and wonderful and convey a true sense of community Brian England - Ellicott City especially, flooded twice and the local businesses emerged stronger than before. I am so glad they decided to reinvest and stay!

Hello Andrea - paying homage to Main Street USA and small businesses is definitely appropriate not only at this time of year but everyday.  They represent so many good qualities we can appreicate:  community and everything associated with that word/term.
