I’m thankful I can still play like a kid!
We became grandparents for the first time 8 years ago, and now there are 4 – aged 8, almost 6, 4 and ½, and 2 (3 are girls). At the time our first one was born I really had no idea how much I would enjoy being a grandparent, and how special the relationships we have with our 2 daughters and their husbands and the 4 grandkids who live in LA would become.
As the grandkids have gotten older and their language and other skills have improved I’m thankful I can still play like a kid…and I enjoy it immensely.
I certainly don’t have the kind of energy they all have…and I consider myself a pretty high energy person…and they have me beat hands down!
But I can still run around, get down on the floor, play imaginary games, have fun building with legos (like this robot I built to the right), draw, paint, play hide and seek, and so much more.
It’s fun to experience how each one is growing up, and the changes that happen so quickly. No doubt this is more noticeable since we don’t see them every day, but even their parents comment on how fast they are growing and changing.
I enjoy taking time to play like a kid (and grateful I allow myself to do so). I never fail to be amazed at what these grandkids know about, talk about, think about, ask about, and some of the things they say and do (well, some of it is not always so nice). But they appreciate so much when I play with them like a kid, and the demands for my attention (and my wife’s of course, too!) seem constant when we visit or they visit us. Thanksgiving is going to be a fun and busy time with everyone here for several days.
And of course all of this is a reminder about what really IS most important in my life, and how thankful I am for my family.
