A Meeting Of Minds

By The Way

Not A Movie Review

A Meeting Of Minds  Let me preface this post:  this isn't a movie review per se but there is a film involved and I do discuss aspects of it.  There are many places where one can find detailed cinema information and backstories of all kinds that will likely fulfill any film fantasy if you want a real review.  I prefer to use the film to explore other thoughts.

A recent trip to the theater found me watching "Marriage Story".  It was released in early November so you may have seen it already.  I was familiar with writer/director Noah Baumbach so I had certain knowledge and expectations.  This has thrown me off-track more than once so I didn't want to prejudge the movie but did warn my movie companion it might a bit wordy.  He didn't want to know anything about the movie prior to seeing it.  I can understand that.

Well, there is a lot of dialog.  I wasn't disappointed in the movie.  In any aspect.  I liked it.  A lot.  But I was a bit concerned that my friend might be overwhelmed with the chatter chatter chatter.  That said the dialog is delivered effectively.  The cast is exceptioanlly good and well-chosen. I liked the narrative and despite the title it is not a story of marriage.  At least not in the traditional sense of the term.  Okay...I will keep my mouth closed now.  As for my friend, he enjoyed it too.  One of the better movies he has seen this year.

I was happy to hear that but the discussion that took place after was about connections of all different sorts. That's where the story begins for me.  Any movie is just a preview of what comes next...  Real life is more than a screenplay.  No script.  Very little drama.  Discussions start. . .

Dorie Dillard CRS GRI ABR - I believe the movie is scheduled to show up on Netflix beginning tomorrow December 1. Yes, it's almost December.

Wayne and Jean Marie Zuhl - and when these sparks ignite, it is a good thing.

Kat Palmiotti - one's perspective and history definitely play a part.  Thank goodness we are unique...

Nina Hollander - I have used that dress rehearsal line before...

Great movie review, err, I forgot it wasn't a movie review, haha.  You are right, life is all about connections and that is where things begin, some workout, some don't, such is life.

Good morning, Michael Jacobs a movie that inspires conversation is even better than a blog post that inspires interaction.... and the results are sure to have some differences....

You are correct, the interesting discussions start after a movie.  We saw the Mr. Rodger's movie yesterday, a movie I had little interest in watching.  It turned out very thought provoking and we (4 generations of Hensons) have discussed it extensively.  Good movies should do that, I think.  It looks like I need to put another one on my list.

Michael, love going to the movies with my buddy, and then having discussion afterwards over pizza & cocktails.    This movie sounds good, but have not heard of it here.

Brian England - things can work out in so many different ways.

Barbara Todaro - it can be quite fascinating when that occurs in real life.

Raymond Henson - I am glad to hear you enjoyed the Tom Hanks as Mr Rogers movie - it's on my list.  Did you happen to see the documentary last year about the life of Mr Rogers?

Joan Cox - it isn't in wide release but I believe it is going to show up on Netflix soon if you are a subscriber - it seems Netflix is trying this strategy.  Will see how it works.

I have Netflix and it has been on my watch list. Communication and discussion is in danger of becoming a lost form. The point you made about movies is a good one because good ones can open up all sorts of dialog as wee compare what happened to our own lives....discuss the actors, and so much else.

Good morning, Michael,

That stock photo was perfect for this post! Today, marriage means so many different things to different people, such as vows, pre-nubtial agreement, cohabitation, married to a partner by the courts or church, someone licensed to marry people, common law marriage, married to your business, ... I guess it depends. Culture plays a role in it too. I always enjoy thinking about different ways to look at something. This movie sounds like one of those opportunities.

Michael,

That is what life is about, drama occurrs and runs rampant when there is no discussion or communication.  It has always been true since relationships began. A

You know, I love this review and had to watch the trailer. Side note, I hate it that they now call movie previews 'trailers' - when I think of trailers, I think of homes on wheels that fly away in tornadoes! I don't know why, I just can't get used to that term, hard as I try!

I digress...

Talking about real life - one thing that I heard in the 'trailer' was something like, "You can't be friends with him!" That is something that I've always wondered if people going through a divorce realize is that oftentimes, the friends don't know what to do.

How do we respond when we love them both? Which one do we invite to the dinner party? Do we call each of them, every other time? As hard as we try to eliminate the drama in our lives, somehow divorce seems to allow a wee bit of that drama to sneak back in - into our real lives.
