1960 – Three of the four Mirabal sisters (Minerva, Patria, and Maria Teresa) of the Dominican Republic are assassinated for their clandestine activities and active resistance to the Rafael Trujillo ("el jefe") dictatorship. They are frequently referred to as "Las Miraposas" or the butterflies.
1999 – The United Nations establishes the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to commemorate the murder of the three Mirabal sisters for resistance against the Rafael Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. The fourth Mirabel sister, Dede, died of natural causes in 2014. Their lives were commemorated in the novel and movie . "In the Time of the Butterflies".
