Beloved bicycles.

I love old pictures as readers know.  I also can't understand why some families don't cherish their old snapshots of family.  The top picture above is an unknown person......cast aside by family who didn't want the old photos.  He seems to be so proud of his bicycle and it, as my husband says, was a NICE bicycle.

The second picture above is a picture of my husband and his sister and his little brother.  With bikes!  The bike that he is beside was not a nice bike, as he remembers it.  If you look closely at his right leg you will see that he had to keep his pants rolled up so it didn't catch in the chain since it had no cover.  He said his first bike had no wheel covers either.  But he loved it!

My first bike was a definite used one, too, with no pedals, just a metal piece that you put your feet on but I was SO thrilled to find that bike on the front porch as a surprise gift.

Didn't we all love our bicycles!!!

Hi Barbara,  Thanks for sharing the pictures and thoughts on bicycles.  There have been some pretty significant changes in some of the bicycles - yet the basics remain the same.  I have had many bikes over the years that I really enjoyed.  A mountain bike, a racing one, and now the one I like best is my recumbent bike.

James, I like the old ones, to see not to ride, and wonder how kids can learn to ride the ones today with all those gears and stuff.

Hello Barbara - I remember my first Stingray-type bike when I was younger.  I am sure there must have been bikes before that but I don't remember...  I like the photos you have shared.  The love and appreciation of those bikes is quite apparent.

My bike in high school was a loaner from Hershel Wyatt my boss at the radio shop. It belonged to his son who did not ride it. I used it to go home for lunch. When I was in my 40's, I had a bike along with the whole family. We would go biking in lots of places. I also rode the bike to work (about 8 miles) when gas was in short supply and expensive. Didn't do it very long. The senior scientist at my work rode a bike to and from work all the time.

Michael, someone pointed out to me that during the war the only bikes available were used ones because they probably had to cease making them just as the war took over manufacturing businesses to make war products.  Parents probably had to find used ones for their kids.
