The IRS has a little-known secret called the First Time Penalty Abatement. There is no need to explain the reasons why you either filed late or didn’t pay the taxes on time, all you need to do is call and request the abatement. If you qualify for the IRS First Time Penalty Abatement the IRS will simply remove it with the phone request and you will get a letter showing the penalty has been removed.

The easiest way to obtain a First Time Penalty Abatement is to call the IRS. You can call the general IRS line at 1-800-829-1040 or the new IRS Penalty Assistance line at 1-855-223-4017 X-225. Even if you are not sure if you qualify for the First Time Penalty Abatement you can just ask over the phone. The IRS agent will just enter your information into a software and the software will determine, based on the prior qualifications, if you qualify for the first-time penalty abatement.
For certain high balances the IRS will require taxpayers to file an IRS form 843, or just write a letter. This is uncommon, and if you call the IRS and they tell you, that you must send in an IRS form 843 to claim the First time penalty abatement, be sure to ask them to run you through their software before hanging up the phone to verify that you indeed need to file the IRS form 843.
