William George was born in Pompey, New York back in 1818 to William and Stacy. His education was limited to the rudiments taught in a country school. To help support his family he left school when he was 13 to carry mail in the local area. In 1838, he worked with Hough & Gilchrist grocers. In 1841, he worked as a fright agent for the Auburn and Syracuse Railroad.
In 1845, he along with Henry and Daniel opened up their own freight agency running from Buffalo to Cincinnati, St. Louis and Chicago. By 1866, the company had expanded naming William the president. He remained in that position until his death in 1881.
What you may not know about William George Fargo is that the company he organized with Henry and Daniel was the American Express Company. Quite an accomplishment for someone with just a basic education, so what’s your excuse?
