My First Winter Workout Was Better Than Any Gym Workout

Services for Real Estate Pros with RE/MAX Executive Realty 104763

Winter is here!!  I was surprised to see approximately 4” of snow this morning. We dodged a bullet, so I thought!

I have motion sensitive outdoor lighting, so I was outside at 6:30am shoveling my double width driveway and two walkways.

I didn’t realize, until I lifted the first shovelful of heavy wet snow, that I was going to have the ultimate workout today.

It was a two hour session. I did 238 deadlifts with heavy wet snow in the shovel. I counted. I focused on what I was doing, so I would not be injured.

The routine was to bend at the knees; fill the shovel with heavy wet snow; stand up straight and hold it for 2 seconds; and throw it with a full upper body motion. My core was totally engaged, and I twisted at the waist…. 238 times.

I have never had such total body workout. This required by legs to stabilize my entire body as it twisted with that weight and thrown using my upper body and core.

Winter in New England is a great time to maintain strength and conditioning.

I’ll be sitting on my not so fat butt for the rest of the day! Tomorrow we are expected to have 3 or 4 more inches.

Wow you did have a good workout this morning.  We get a few snows every year but not much accumulations.  I bet you'll be ready for a nap later.  I know I would be.  Hope you have a great day!

Barbara Todaro up here on the North Coast we call 4" or less snow winter dew... not really , 4" is a good workout when moving it by shovel. This last storm went South on us although for several days the weather guessers said we were going to get 10 to 12 inches. We ended up with about 2 inches.

Gets the job done!

I like to pretend I am a snow plow.  It sometimes works at less than 6 inches.   I developed the technique in upstate NY.   Now I am older and have a bit of trouble shoveling.  That technique takes less effort.

Barbara, if you lived here, you would have already had some good workouts!   We have had 26" of snow so far.....a foot last Tuesday.  BUT, ours is fluffy, not heavy and wet, only in the spring.

There was a time when I lived in Minnesota with my parents prior to college, and I did shovel snow, and we also shoveled snow for the next door neighbor who was elderly.  It is a great workout, but I am happy to be living here with snow in the distant mountains.  A

Hi Barbara - it's still Fall in Southern California and on the officical calendar too.  I'm a bit doubtful that kicking the few fallen leaves off the trees that are not yet bare will enhance any fitness routine.  As for shoveling snow, good for you and I enjoyed the white stuff on the ground when I lived in Washington DC for a few years - another place that doesn't react well to adverse conditions.  Weather or anything else.  It seems.

Hi Barbara,  That sounds like a fantastic workout.  I never thought of it that way.  Next time I will count my shovel lifts.  We did have a few inches of the heavy wet snow too.  I found out I can't throw it as far as I used to be able to.

Oh I do remember those days of shoveling driveways in Alaska. And yes, it's the ultimate workout. I can see you counting the shovel lifts. You inspire me to get off my own butt.

PS - Snow shoveling is also scary as it brings on heart attacks for those who aren't in good shape.
