Philo Taylor Farnsworth

Managing Real Estate Broker with Fathom Realty PB00068179

Philo Taylor Farnsworth was born in Beaver, Utah back in 1906 to Lewis and Serena. He grew up in a log cabin built by his father until 1918, when the family moved to a 240-acre ranch near Rigby, Idaho. His education was at the Rigby High School. The family moved again to Provo, Utah in 1923 where he attended Brigham Young High School.

After graduation, he applied to the United States Naval Academy scoring the nation’s second-highest score on academy recruiting results.  Within a few months of being accepted he obtained an honorable discharge. He returned to Utah enrolling at Brigham Young University. He moved again to Berkeley, California where he set up a lab at 202 Green Street, while there he received his first patent. His patent was first seen by the press in 1928. As they say the rest is history.

What you may not know about Philo is that he built and patented the first all-electric image device of course what we now call the TV.

I do believe, James, that I need to be thankful for this man's invention... otherwise how would I keep up with General Hospital for 50+ years?

Good morning James Dray - Oh looking at that name I am wondering in that is where Philco comes from.  Remember that company?  That was the manufacturer of my grandmother's first tiny tube tv.

Hi James Dray - I often wonder how long a person like Philo worked on the project (tv) before he was successful.  I am guessing years and years.

Hi James, Thanks for the history behind the TV - I am sure he had no idea to what extent his invention would actually be used.

Philo Taylor Farnsworth invented the television. Where did he go from there? I looked him up on the Internet. What a genius!

He first got his idea by driving past crop fields- noticing how the rows changed his view depending upon the growth of the crops. From this he devised that one could transmit a moving image by changing the scan lines. (More scan lines would offer more accurate images.)

Thankfully- he discussed the science of this with his teacher and their notes helped establish his claim for having the earliest documented proof behind the technology. There are still those who claim they had a similar idea (just as there existed counter claims to Marconi's radio.)

For us in these parts we're proud to claim him as a somewhat local. His patents in and around television were among 165-ish of his total of around 300 patents.
