Not postive Jeff but I think it is post office rules. Our farm used to have several mail boxes together and now all are in front of the actual home. Actually stupid as the route carrier has to make a ton more stops to deliver. Wear and tear on the vehicles for all the extra starts and stops. And rural carriers have to provide their own vehicles. (My dad was one back in the day of grouped boxes like the above picture) Yet in the subdivisions, they have gone to cluster mail boxes. The guys driving the postal trucks have less stops and the guys driving the country roads now have more stops. Makes sense like everything else the government runs.

Hi Sharon Lee
We drove by them many times and I never stopped for a photo. So glad I did, a couple of times. I was really bummed when they all disappeared!

Hi Faye Y. Taylor
I suspect you are right! No doubt the change was for the convenience of the P.O. not the homeowners. I was tempted to drive down the road to see what might have changed but felt like an interloper.
Jeff
Jeff loved both photos and had to laugh I knew in Carlsbad you would not get the white stuff:))Endre
Good morning, Jeff Dowler, CRS wow... that poor mailman who needs to pay close attention to which box he's stuffing mail into!!
Good morning, Jeff... I've seen something like this a few times but can't say I was ever "moved" to take a photo of it. These days nothing we see much in city limits so it's probably worth preserving in a photo.
That looks like the original cluster mailbox and is quite a sight for sore eyes, haha. I definitely prefer having the mailbox in front of each home, but that isn't as common these days.
Good morning Jeff. Been years since I have seen a collection like that up close and personal. Thanks for the memories. Enjoy your day!
Those were quite common in days gone by, weren't they? I think most of them have been replaced with more secure clusters thanks to fraudsters.
Jeff the snow plow knocks my mailbox down every year, I think the driver does it on purpose. I bet he would have a field day trying to wipe out all of these mailboxes in one shot. ![]()
What a fascinating display. All I can see when I look at those boxes is stolen mail. At the very least I would have found a way to secure the content of the boxes. Wonder what they put in their place?
Well I suppose it is always possible for snow if it gets cold enough Endre Barath, Jr. but it's not something I think about. LOL.

Hi George Souto
Yep that happened alot to us when we lived in New England. Drove me nuts. The plow alway came by right after I finished clearing our driveway!!

I would not be surprised if stolen mail was an issue, and in that general area there were lots of mailboxes grouped together. Maybe the required homeowners to put them at their houses (I was tempted to drive down the road to see) or pick mail up at the P.O.
Jeff
The mailboxes are gone to history and you have captured them for posterity. The photos should be framed and hung in their local post office.
That is quite the row of mailboxes. Interesting the changes that happen over time.
