Russel Farnham

Managing Real Estate Broker with Fathom Realty PB00068179

Russel Farnham was born in Massachusetts back in 1784. I have no information about his early childhood, schooling or even the names of his parents. What I can tell you is that he was hired as a clerk for the Pacific Fur Company. He traveled by sea around the Cape Horn arriving on the Pacific coast.

In 1811, he fought the Indians at The Dalles, where he built a trading post near Spokane. In 1814, he was entrusted for 40,000.00 sterling relating to the sale of a trading post by the North-West Company. He was ordered to deliver them to St. Petersburg. During his journey, he suffered from exposure and malnutrition. He once was forced to cut and eat the tops of his own boots to survive. He did survive the trip, but it took a toll on his health.

What you may not know about Russel is that the trip he took he did so my foot, crossing the Bering Straits on an ice sheet making his was to St. Petersburg and onto Paris eventually arriving in New York City. He was the first American to semi-circumnavigate the world. He died in 1832, he was 48.

Good morning James,

I'll go for a hike but not that route and today would have been arrested as soon as he crossed the border.

Make yourself an astonishing day.

Is that where the saying came from "shoe leather". That was a trip that even now would be a feat.

Good morning, James... now that is one man who truly experienced amazing adventures. Shame he died so young, but I suppose what he lived through contributed to that early death.

Hi James- that really is an amazing story. What a shame that he died so young. But I'll bet he packed more into his short life than others do.

Russel Farnham was certainly an adventurous individual. He was also honest and honorable. He could have taken that large sum of money and disappeared.
