William M. Freehan was born in 1929. He graduated from Saint John’s University in 1952. He served in the United States Army seeing action in Korea, he received the Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. After his discharge, he joined the New York Fire Department (FDNY).
He held every rank within the fire department, starting with Probationary Firefighter starting in 1959. Promoted to Lieutenant in 1964 and Chief of Department in 1991. He was the first firefighter to accomplish that. He briefly served as Acting Fire Commissioner, before a new Commissioner was appointed by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
What you may not know about William is that he died in 2001, doing what he did best at the World Trade Center on 9-11-01. He was 71. This is the first person I’ve came across that gave it all. One of his sons John is currently a Captain of Engine 249 in New York City. Sadly, there will be more, will let you know when I come across them.
