Who doesn't enjoy a beautiful Christmastime production of the Nutcracker Ballet?
Our family's enjoyed this particular group's production of the Nutcracker Ballet at the Center for the Performing Arts in downtown San Jose for several of the last 54 years. It is the longest running Nutcracker production in San Jose.
When I took ballet as a young girl, the ballet school I studied at was the Los Gatos Academy of Dance run by Shawn Stuart and Paul Curtiss (which later became the San Jose Dance Theatre). Everyone was welcome to audition, and even now the auditions are open to students from other schools. The open auditions are held just after Labor Day.
My eldest daughter and her fiancee generously treated my husband and I to this lovely performance of the Nutcracker, which included live music from the Cambrian Symphony Orchestra.
My insight this year was I noticed how deeply my body responded to the music. Maybe it's because I've been working on my soul all year. Perhaps it's because I'm practising "being present". Or maybe it's because I was reading about and learning whole body breathing exercises earlier from the Jutta Ritschel book, "The Little Book of Speaking Up Find Your Voice in 5 Minutes a Day with 65 Whole-Body Exercises."
I've always loved this Tchaichovsky score, yet at this performance I felt almost as if I was another instrument playing along. It felt as if my spirit was literally resonating with the strings, horns and drums. My body and brain experienced such relaxation and joy. This was truly a magical Christmas experience-thank you again Marlene and Dan.
The San Jose Dance Theatre's production of the Nutcracker is usually held the first (and sometimes second) weekend of December at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts.
