Having Trouble With ActiveRain's Gremlins? Try This

The gremlins have been loose and they come in more than one variety.

Here are some known issues and what to do when you run across the pesky bugs.

1.  When trying to write a blog post, the blog editor doesn't fully load.

Basically, you get the top bar, but the editor field doesn't appear so you can't enter text.

You can always try the old standby:  clear cookies/cache/log out/reboot and try again.

Most likely that WILL NOT fix the issue.

Some Rainers have reported using the DOWN ARROW pushes past the blank spot and they can then post normally.

What can you do?

The most common fix is to switch browsers.

The problem is USUALLY isolated to just one browser on a person's computer.

Having trouble with Chrome?  Try Firefox.

Having trouble with Firefox?  Try Chrome.

It may not make a whole lot of sense, but it seems to typically resolve the issue.
It's not necessarily an ActiveRain issue per se, but a combination of your operating system, your browser and supporting programs on your computer and ActiveRain.  Some folks get the "magic" recipe that doesn't work.  Changing the browser changes the recipe.

2.  Heavy Load error messages.

Despite rumors to the contrary, ActiveRain DOES operate on multiple servers.  Your account may be on Server A today, Server B tomorrow.  What is SUPPOSED to happen  when a server is reaching load capacity, other servers are supposed to transfer accounts over from the heavy load server, rebalancing the overall load.  This obviously doesn't always happen as it is supposed to.

What can you do?  Notify support or just wait it out.  After support has hit the appropriate server with the appropriate numbers of whacks with the trusty rubber mallet, things return to normal.

3.  Spam attacks.

We get spam comments periodically.  Some of those folks need to leave their mama's basement and get a life.  Lately there's been a spammer we refer to as "The Alphabet Spammer".    The comments are random letters.  No words, no links.  The spammer seems to favor Featured posts AND posts written by the same blogger that are adjacent to the featured post.  Those aren't the ONLY posts hit, but seem to be the main focus.

What can you do?

Use the report link.  ActiveRain will remove the comment AND block the IP address of the spammer.  Now for the Alphabet spammer, he/she/gremlin grabs another IP and keeps on going.

Next step?  Disabling comments either just on that post OR go nuclear and disable ALL outside comments on all posts.  The drawback to that is obviously you also disable the ability of "good" consumers to leave comments on your posts.

4.  Trouble posting listings.

This one is simple.  The ActiveRain selection for LISTING is broken and has been for some time.  Don't hold your breath waiting for it to be fixed.  Best bet, post your listing like a normal post.  DO NOT try and add the listing address or your post may go POOF.

Obviously some of these approaches may be inconvenient.  It is what it is.
Need further help?  Try tagging ActiveRain Member Support or popping a question up in the Q&A section.  Either another Rainer or Support will usually be able to provide some guidance.

Good luck!  And be careful with the gremlins after midnight!

I recently had to update 100s of my old posts because my company's IDX changed (@#$%*). This was a struggle.

For just regular reading and commenting, I use Chrome but for any posting, editing, etc. I have to use Firefox.

Reworking the entire AR editor has been on my Santa list for years . . .

Helping you find your way home.

I like to think that the AlphaSpamster is the CIA, or MI-5, or KGB's way of communicating with their agents in the field.  They don't use any 'links' to online stores, or courtesan girls in Hyderabad... so it's the only thing I can think of.

And it's kind of exotic, dontcha think?

Hi Bill:

Thanks for the tips on dealing with these frustrations that arise from time to time, some more than others. Good reading for new folks who haven't experienced these issues and wonder if it's them the first time these things happen (not the spam, of course - seems our spammers are equal opportunity).
