Tips for Responding to Home Emergencies in Frisco

If you really want to be trained to handle home emergencies, consider Frisco’s fire department for their Citizen’s Fire Academy. You’ll be trained by real firefighters to better handle all sorts of home emergencies, and you’ll also get a chance to see how the fire department works. There is also a class that helps train citizens to be better prepared to help first responders in case of an accident or emergency. These are both great programs, helping to bring emergency preparedness awareness to the people of Frisco. In the meantime, here are some tips to get you started:

  1.       Stung by a bee – We’ve got long, hot summers here in Frisco, and that means plenty of bees, buzzing around, pollinating our gardens and flower beds. And while bees will usually leave you alone if you leave them alone, you or your child might occasionally be stung by a bee. If you are stung by a bee, do you need to drop everything and call an ambulance? Only if you know the person who has been stung is allergic to bee stings or has started to show the first signs of an allergic reaction (swelling face or mouth, itchy tongue, hives).

  1.       Small fire in your home – Even if you think you’ve put the fire out, it’s still important to call the fire department. Embers could be hiding in your walls, just waiting for a gust of fresh oxygen to reignite them. Were you having a barbecue in your backyard and an ember jumped out of your grill and onto your grass, creating a small, but easily extinguishable fire? It’s probably still a good idea to call the fire department, just to make sure that the fire really is out, no matter how much water you’ve dumped onto it. Fire isn’t that uncommon here in Frisco, and following this protocol can prevent something small from becoming something unmanageable and destructive.

  1.       Chest pains – When it comes to chest pains, it’s always better to be safe, rather than sorry. Even if you are young, fit, and eat a healthy diet, you could still have a heart attack. If you or someone else says that they are having chest pains, the best thing to do is to call Frisco’s 911. It may just turn out to be indigestion, but it’s better to know for sure rather than just hope it’s not an issue.
