Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon 2020

Christmas and Hanukkah will soon be past, as will New Year’s Eve, and if you are a runner you might be finishing your training for the upcoming Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon.
No doubt there are plenty of runners from other areas of the freezing cold US who are planning on this world-class event, too, and with good reason – it’s a BIG deal!
The Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon takes place in a little over 3 weeks, on Sunday January 19th, in our beautiful village by the sea, Carlsbad California.
That’s also the Martin Luther King holiday weekend (the holiday is officially Monday the 20th)!
Serious runners will be pleased that the Carlsbad marathon again is a qualifying event for the famous Boston Marathon.
The Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon also includes a Double Down Challenge (2 races – the 5K and then the half marathon, a total of 16.2 miles) and the Surf SunRun 5K.
The Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon are popular with both world class and amateur runners, along with plenty of appreciative viewers along the course. The Carlsbad marathon is a favorite due to the location and views - who does not appreciate Southern California weather in January?! And the gently rolling course with minimal elevation changes is pretty special too, with a large portion along the beautiful Carlsbad coastline on historic Route 101/Coast Highway.
The marathon and half marathon both start and finish at The Shoppes at Carlsbad mall but follow different courses.
There is also a Kids Marathon Mile for kids of all ages and abilities. This event takes place at world-famous Legoland Carlsbad on Saturday January 18th.
Residents and visitors should be aware there are some significant road closures before and during the marathon, from approximately 5 am until 2 pm on Sunday. Soon we will be seeing signs around town as a reminder of the road closures, including the Coast Road/Carlsbad Boulevard (all lanes) along the ocean from the Oceanside border (North of downtown Carlsbad) to La Costa Avenue.
The Health and Lifestyle Expo takes place on Friday January 17th from 12 noon until 5 pm at The Shoppes at Carlsbad off El Camino Real in Carlsbad (just south of the 78 freeway) where the marathon and half marathon courses start and finish. The Expo continues on Saturday, from 10 am until 5 pm. All participants should pick up their bib numbers and race shirts at the Expo on either day.
Join in the Finish Line fun at the festival with refreshments, live music and a beer garden (21 and older only).
