Mary Katherine Horony-Cummings was born in Erekujvar, Austrian Empire back in 1849 to Mihaly and Katharina. In 1869, the family arrived in the United States, settling in Davenport, Iowa. Both parents died just three years after arriving in Davenport. She was first sent to live with her husband’s brother-in-law and then left in the care of attorney Otto Smith.
She ran away when she was 16 travelling as a stow away arriving in St. Louis Missouri where she entered the Ursuline Convent but she didn’t stay long before leaving. The next time there is any record of her she was working as a prostitute in Dodge City, Kansas. In 1876, she moved to Fort Griffin, Texas. Her travels continued to Valdosta, Georgia Trinidad, Colorado and Las Vegas, New Mexico. In 1887, she traveled to Redstone, Colorado to visit her brother Alexander. She married an Irish blacksmith George Cummings in Aspen in 1890. She died in Prescott, Arizona in 1940, she was 90.
What you may not know about Mary is that during most of travels she was with someone who all of you know as Doc Holliday. She was in Tombstone when the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Maybe you know her by her nickname Big Nose Kate.
