Would I buy this again?

I am a terrible pack rat that is trying to become a minimalist! This blog by Cindy Bernstein has a great decluttering list! I have read a lot this subject, and this is the best I have seen. I know it is going to help me. I am reposting it in hopes that more people like me will see it!

I often say that we can talk ourselves into keeping almost anything.

Here are some (hopefully) helpful questions to ask yourself, just in case you have time to declutter this week:

  • Is this something I currently use?
  • Would I buy this again? (MY FAVORITE QUESTION OF ALL)
  • Do I absolutely love it?
  • Is this worthy of the space it will occupy?
  • Will I be able to find it if I need it?
  • Could I get another one if I needed it?
  • Does this help me to reach my goal of reducing the volume?

Happy Decluttering! And challenge yourself to stay away from the "After Christmas" Sales

I'm a pack rat myself but just as you are trying to minimalize, so am I and this short list is all that you need!

Those are some good things to consider before making a purchase. I think I do a pretty good job except around Christmas

Tom,

Those are all great questions. The question not on this list that I ask myself is "does this thing make me happy?" If no, I get rid of it immediately. No second guessing! In 2019, I threw a lot out.

Happy New Year!

You know, we are clearing out my MIL's belongings (she just moved to a retirement community) and your favorite question is what I shared with the family, Tom! It worked beautifully too.

Tom Bailey - As I am forced to stay home because of the pandemic, I am discovering it is harder to get rid of things than to acquire them. When I was 18 and got my own apartment, it was three rooms upstairs from a very old couple. They were in their 80s and had survived WW11 and the Great Depression. As you can imagine, at such a tender age, I barely had enough to fill up a suitcase, let alone any furniture. I had a conversation with the Landlords and I'll never forget what he told me. To hang on to things you store and don't use is costing you more money and wasting your time. Time is valuable. Get rid of what you don't need and acquire wealth, not things. Being young, I fluffed it off. Today the words come back to haunt me.
