January Is National Radon Action Month: Test And Protect Your Home

January 2020 Is National Radon Action Month

What's your radon IQ? January is National Radon Action Month. While the Charlotte metro area, in general, is not known for high radon levels, we do find homes from time to time with radon levels that are too high and that need remediation.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. Did you know that radon is called the "silent killer" because you can't see it, smell it, feel it, etc.? It's one of the major causes of lung cancer and causes more than 21,000 deaths each year, making it the seond biggest cause of lung cancer deaths. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. In other words, radon kills!

And did you know that the Surgeon General recommends that all homes be tested for radon? And according to the CDC, one in 15 homes have elevated radon levels. And if you live in a home with high radon levels and smoke, your risk of contracting lung cancer increase by 10 times.

Free Radon Test Kits In North & South Carolina

North Carolina and South Carolina are both offering state residents FREE radon test kits in January.

Testing your home for radon is as simple as opening a package, placing a radon detector in a designated area, and after the prescribed number of days (2-7 days), sealing the detector back in the package and mailing it to a lab for evaluation. Radon is measured in picocuries per liter of air (pCi/L), a measurement of radioactivity. The U.S. EPA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that homes with radon levels at or above 4 pCi/L be repaired to reduce the amount of radon entering the indoor air.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel hi Alexandra... fortunately, in all my years in real estate, I've only ever had one home that needed serious radon remediation. But I still encourage clients to inspect for it when they purchase a home.

Will Hamm hi Will... I would not say we have anywhere near 86% of people checking for radon in the Charlotte area. Then again, we don't have as much radon as you do in Colorado.

Important announcement for those places that have this problem. Long Island is the residue of a sandy glacier. It does not have much uranium in the ground to make hazardous levels of radon. Buyers from out-of-state are surprised when they confirm that testing is not mandatory here.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 hi Sheila and Larry... it's not mandatory here either, but we do have pockets in the Charlotte region that might have elevated radon levels... I have an excellent inspector who knows those pockets so if I'm selling a home there, he always strongly recommends to my clients that they do a radon inspection. Fortunately, to-date... all came back negative.

Nina it is wise to periodically test for radon, you never know when conditions may change.

George Souto hi George... that's an excellent point. I had one client whose basement foundation was cracked and with sitting on a lake radon was high... obviously that was a change from when she purchased the house years before as the floor had not been cracked then.

Great education here for buyers, Nina. We always tested for radon in New England and it could be a pretty big problem - thankfully no properties I sold had high levels - but that's not the case here in San Diego County given the levels we have.

Morning Nina.

Interesting video, we haven't had our home tested in four years now.  Guess it's time to get it done

Jeff Dowler, CRS hi Jeff... fortunately, I've had only one property thus far that tested for high radon levels and obviously it was remediated... there was a specific reasons for those levels and not due to a radon issue in the area.

Good morning, Nina Hollander test and protect your lungs!! Radon is a real and it causes lung cancer with very high readings.... I know of home in my town that had an off the charts reading....the wife died of lung cancer....

Barbara Todaro hi Barbara... this is so important especially for areas known to have high levels of naturally occurring radon. I just heard about a neighbor who has contracted lung cancer who has never smoked and never lived with second-hand smoke... made me wonder if she had exposure to radon at some point in time. No wonder they call radon the silent killer.
