FOR THE LOVE of POINTS (addict-rain)

By

This post is just for fun so no hate mail please LOL. I was reading the Q & A which is controversial at this time and laughed when the subject of points came up. It made me remember when I was a point-addict and monitored closely points coming and going. There was a reason for it i.e. to save some money using the point system achievement program. Another reason was....

FUN FUN FUN

I remember playing silly amusement games in Coney Island, Redondo Pier, Pomona Fair, and even at Chuck E. Cheese pizza places to name a few. They all had something in common. If you won at the games you got coupons via point totals. Said coupons were redeemable for worthless gifts, doo-dads of the lowest order made in china and kids love them in the moment only. Todays treasure tomorrows trash

EVEN SO...

People participated, played to win and redeemed or gave away the coupons. The satisfaction and interaction that comes from it all has some value of distraction. It is so harmless it shouldn't have to be explained just played for laughs, fun and for no reason too.  I like giving my coupons away to others who got excited

ACTIVERAIN POINTS

Is so much fun and educational too plus interaction with your like professors of Real Estate. Hey, once you get to 500,000 points you are not mad but glad. Life after that still compels one to play and stay even at one million points and two million. Heck, there people who have five million points & counting

SMILE AT THIS

I have seen people complain about not getting points, missing points and how to get more points. I can recognize a point hound no problem. Anyone starting out is hungry for points and the hunt for them. They will do whatever they can to get them. Point drive-bys are common. A quick answer and ouila...points

IF NOT POINT DRIVEN

Once I came out of my point-stupor type of conduct ( we all get over it at different times), you move more toward actual exchanges of information, personal stories and getting to know you dynamics. You share in the trenches, war-time Real Estate in & outs plus up & downs. In other words you really like what you are doing for the doing of it. At that time, the points are still there but in the back-seat so to speak

NEED TO GET INTO CYBERSPACE

I remember when I got started here in ActiveRain, it wasn't long before I was contacted by someone looking for me and found me online via postings. They wanted me to handle a large Real Estate deal and the results netted me $20,000 & some deep satisfaction. I thought: Wow, ActiveRain paid for itself for the next10 years

WHEN THINGS GET TOO SERIOUS

Wheres the love? I have seen ActiveRain wars in writing between members past and present. Over time one learns to not air dirty laundry in public and to not say what you are really thinking unless you have lost your mind and literally gone post-al....LOL  The wild card is human nature. Calm & common sense must rule

HYPOTHETICAL ACTIVERAIN SCENARIO

You just accumulated an enormous amount of points. You are getting ready to call it a night when an ActiveRain bandit pulls out their mouse, clicks and says: This is a hold-up. Give me all your points and no one gets hurt. To some point addicts, this is a life and death scenario. To others they can always get more points. Do we: A: comply? B: fight-back C. plead D. offer money or jewelry E. laugh out loud bandit flees

JUST FOR FUN

I remember I did so many posts on points and their peculiarity/dynamics. One was when I die I bequeath all my ActiveRain points as follows. Subscribers got the most, commenters after that and then specific AR friends. The other post I did is where we were able to buy things in ActiveRain-land where points were money and they matter. One post had a methodone type point program to get off raw pure point addiction

MIND YOU

Meanwhile: I am sharing Real Estate, real life, inside data, solutions, advice, feedback, input and my own prefrences from others as well. When short-sales were all the norm, I learned so much here on how to win at that game and I did. Shared knowledge is power when applied. So there you have it. Its all here. Are you?

Great post.  There is a lot of knowledge in the rain.  Working for points will pass after we reach our goal.

Richie loved this post, I also loved the "good old days" when I was point driven... then a light bulb went off and realized it was not about the points it was about relationships, friendships, referrals and the list goes on and on and yes points became secondary... I laugh at those who are still at the "point driven phase" and funny  some are on the first two pages of AR's leader board:))Endre

Good morning Richie. When you know nobody, the challenge is points. When you become known it is the relationships. I particularly like personal meetings. I have met quite a few over the years. Many left to meet. Enjoy your day!

I'll admit, Richie, that I didn't understand anything about the point system or what it did until I had accumulated almost 300,000 points and had accidentally listened to a webinar by Bob Stuart who explained the value of achieving 500,000 points. But beyond that, taking points seriously is just beyond me... after all it's not like I can spend them anywhere. I'm here for the relationships.... no other real reason, as this platform has certainly not contributed to my bottom line. I look to my own website to generate leads. All that being said, I hate those drive-by point hogs... they are so obvious... and antithetical to the  value of the Rain.

Have you ever been referred to as a point monger?  I agree with you that the relationships made within the Rain are way more valuable than the points that we gain.

Hi Richie - a fun post but what's the point?  Of course, ActiveRain goes far beyond points.  Although I don't recall ever visiting Chuck E Cheese, I am sure the camaraderie and other "stuff" more than makes up for anything in the "prize haul" that takes place.

Oh, I saw this on Brian's blog and had to share what I shared with him, Richie - and by-the-way, you're spot-on!

I had to laugh at your comment about chasing points. Not too long ago, I had a member phone me about another member (not even in their state) who was 'cheating the system' somehow - he was "leaping over" her on the leaderboard!

It wasn't about her city, county or even her state - it was about the LEADER BOARD! Who on EARTH cares about that?! Evidently there are still point 'mongers' here in the Rain! For me, it's about the people and sharing quality content in the hopes that somehow a consumer or two will find me each year here!

Happy New Year, Richie!

Hi Richie:

I really enjoyed this post. You've made some very good points (sorry, had to do it!). Points on AR have been a topic of discussion, and disagreement, for as long as I can remember, as well as changes in what they are awarded for. The point is being here on AR is a very good thing if you participate and share, regardless of how you feel about points. Points made!

Jeff

I still like the points just to tell myself I am active in the Rain - but to be honest- I am really accumulating them so that I can redeem them for a cloud with a better cushion and color in the afterlife - one that is closer to the front with a view of all the activity
