Pondering Predictions...

Pondering Predictions. . . When looking at this post title, one might think that I would be addressing the announcement scheduled for Monday January 13 of the nominees for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences Academy Awards.  That might be a somewhat logical prediction as I tend to like the movie-going experience.  After all, tomorrow brings the "breaking news" of who will be the nominees for that self-proclaimed spectacular taking place next month.  Well, like so many other predictions...that is not the case.  Hold the envelope!

Predictions of all sorts seem to enter our world at various times.  That is, if we allow them to approach and gain entry. You can stop them at the door and say no thanks if you like.  Yes, you have that power.  You don't need to listen to words of might be.....could be....should be.

Predictions can be tricky business.  Even in the best of circumstances.  But it definitely is a business.  A big business or so it seems.

We seem to see it all sorts of places.  It happens on the sports field.  In town halls and other such places along the campaign trail.  Before, during as well as after an election.  And then there are the results.  Still more predictions - what does everyone/anyone think?

It can even happen here on ActiveRain.  In more than a couple different ways - what kind of answer can one expect when a question is asked?  What will the comments be for a given post or topic?  Some are somewhat predictable I guess but there are lots of curveballs happening and surprise outcomes to tell us predictions of many kinds can get us in some pretty deep do do.  Yes, do do is an actual term.  If not, I predict it should be.

So when I ponder, I often to look to the words of others for insight.   When it comes to predictions I like this quote:

The predictions I can make with the highest confidence

will be the ones

we are not today wise enough to foresee

                                                                        Carl Sagan

Hi Michael.
I rarely predict anything but, like you, I do ponder.  Any of those who predicted the Ravens would win yesterday were WRONG!  The Packers have a slight predictive edge over the Seahawks today and I am hoping they are wrong too!

Michael,

I am delighted with this post.  Like Nina Hollander and others I have mentioned that my crystal ball is not the best predictor.  However, I can and have accurately predicted a win based on someones' ability to market and get the. message out.  It is no big deal if one can observe all the facts that go into it. I do like Carl Sagan's take!  A

Roy Kelley - and I hear the first predictions of who will run in 2024 are being released in just a few days.  Oh, the anticipation...

Carol Williams - my pondering doesn't necessarily involve any particular outcome and that's perfect or as close to perfection as far as I am concerned.  Good luck today.  Is luck predictive?  I wonder.

Alexandra Ron and Alexandra Seigel - that may involve some strategic thinking, thoughtful analysis and a keen sense of intuition/sixth sense may have some bearing.  Thank you for the kind words.

Few if any have a reliable crystal ball.  It is often the shenanigans going on behind the scenes that derail any vision we think we may have.  For example, who among us in late 2005, would have predicted the housing meltdown brought on because of toxic lending?  I remember showing homes back then, and thinking they seemed inflated in price.  Yet, folks were working, and the economy looked pretty sweet.  It was what was going on behind the curtains that put us into the Great Recession.  I ponder a lot, I predict less!

I wonder who predicted that the Titans would upset the Ravens yesterday? I am still shaking my head on that one. That's why I am ok with pondering, and not very good a predictions.

Hi Michael- I'm of the opinion that predictions would be more accurate if people weren't in any way involved.

Grant Schneider - not a bad game plan

Myrl Jeffcoat - darn crystal balls seem to get a lot of blame, don't they?

Jerry Newman - when will head-shaking take the place of predicting?  No wagers, in sight.

Kathy Streib - no involvement, at all?  That would be novel, wouldn't it?

Predictions - Sagan said it eloquently. Your post is great too. It gives room for lots of pondering. Wouldn't it be great to have a Ponderosa People Resort or Ponderosa Ranch specifically for ponderers to ponder on their own or with a group of other ponderers? I can see it now, sitting around a campfire at night, staring at the stars, just pondering....
