William Floyd was born in Brookhaven, Province of New York back in 1734 to Nicholl and Tabitha. I don’t have anything about his upbringing or education. His father died in1755, which left it up to William to take over the day to day operations of the family farm. With the onset of the American Revolutionary War he joined the Suffolk County Militia, rising to the rank of Major General.
He was a delegate to the First Continental Congress and a member of the New York State Senate. In 1789, he was elected to the 1st United States Congress. He was the presidential elector in 1792 voting for George Washington and George Clinton. In 1795, he ran for Lieutenant Governor of New York but was defeated by John Jay. He died in 1821, he was 86.
What you may not know about William is that when in Congress he is a signed of a document you may have heard of “The United States Declaration of Independence.”
