What Did You Do Before Real Estate?

Real Estate Broker/Owner with HomeRome Realty 410-530-2400 311291

Does your previous experience help in making you a better REALTOR®?

For me, there were two prior careers.

Porcelain MRome

Registered Nurse RN

Real estate professionals are from all walks of life...doctors, lawyers, and Indian chiefs.

There are nurses, artists, teachers, law enforcement, homemakers,  scientists, musicians, business owners, truck drivers, PHDs, rocket scientists, engineers, CEO's and even high school dropouts... to name a few.

When meeting other agents I like to know what led them to this career.  What skills are they bringing to the industry?

This week Heather called to say she was running a few minutes late for an appointment. How refreshing.

(We've all had agents cancel last minute,

arrived an hour late or were a no show and no call.)

After Heather came, showed the buyer this house, I found out she was a former real estate attorney.

Was it her law career that made her kind and respectful of time, or was that just her nature? Most likely a combination, and I wanted to work with her!

When one agent shows respect for another, everyone wins. We set an excellent example for our clients. After all, it's about our buyers and sellers and how we facilitate a transaction from start to finish.

First impressions on a showing, on answering a phone, on returning a text or email all go into setting up the experience for a successful transaction.

What was your previous career?

How has it helped you as a REALTOR®?

Morning Margaret.

Of course my 29 year career in law enforcement taught me to be thorough if nothing less.  I don't make any decisions without getting both sides of the story

James Dray  I thought of you when writing this.

That's a valuable lesson learned in law enforcement.  And much needed in RE transactions.

Good morning Margaret. Majored in pre-med in college. Then in the first semester of my senior year, realized medicine was not for me! Graduated and went to work in a Savings and Loan as a loan officer while I sorted things out. A real estate broker challenged me to get a license while I was in law school in the evenings. Got the bug and never looked back! Enjoy your day!

A corporate job was my first career - that taught me organization, follow-through, communication, project management, financial management -- all important things in running a real estate business!

Hi Margaret - it's interesting to think about "why people are the way they are".  Is it because of their previous careers.  Upbring?  So many different factors come into play.  You naturally find out the background of people you meet. That makes a difference.  In real estate and in real life.

Good morning Margaret. I have always believed that everything I have ever done has prepared me for anything I will ever do. I was a teacher, a counselor a traing director for government and a waitress.

Hi Margaret!

No matter what you do in business or your chosen career, you have to care. Really, really care. Money doesn't mean anything if the motivation is greed. If serving the needs of people doesn't include caring, then one may be in the wrong business.

I was in ad sales and programming sales, then retail, before real estate.  I find my out of the box approach to marketing (not being trained in marketing first as a real estate agent, but someone that had to get results to continue to sell ads,) helps my sellers tremendously.

My first significant jobs were in the insurance industry.  First as a policy typist, then a rater, and then an underwriter.  Later on, I became a Speedo rep, and sold swimsuits and equipment to swimmers on various swim teams.  I've also worked in the software development industry.

Hi Margaret- after getting my masters in clinical psychology, I did some psychological testing, then went into staffing office support personnel in companies. Loved that job!
