Arrogant Bastard. . .Really?

By
Real Estate Agent with GreatWest Realty DRE# 00827565

I must admit, until I encountered Ron and Alexandra Seigel here on ActiveRain, I hadn't paid as much attention to branding as I should have been!  But, I've moved away a tad from that ignorance, and am currently a little more alert to any interesting branding which comes my way.

Yesterday, was a busy day with some challenge dealing with certain appointments I was trying to obtain.  I had a nice lunch earlier in the day, but by day's end, I was exhausted and not really hungry.  On the kitchen counter I found a small bag of Angie's "Boom Chica Pop" Sweet and Salty popcorn, from the Dollar Tree. I peered into my refrigerator, and set my gaze on a  22 oz. bottle of Arrogant Bastard Ale resting on the top shelf.  It seemed a pleasant pairing to me.

After a few sips, of this previously untried brew, I thought it pleasant enough, but noticed a slightly bitter flavor, which I haven't experienced with my favorite ale, Anderson Valley Bourbon Barrel Stout.  Still, I was interested in the “Arrogant Bastard” branding which contained the bi-line, "You aren't worthy."

Curiosity had me doing a little exploration on the internet to learn more about this product. Here's a little snippet located: "This is an aggressive beer. You probably won't like it.  It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth."

Well, since I had only partnered it with the small bag of popcorn from the Dollar Tree, I certainly wouldn't entirely disagree with their assessment about my sophistication. However, while I admire their interesting marketing, I will stick to my favored “Anderson Valley Bourbon Barrel Stout." It’s twice the price, but worth every cent!

I have a very mixed response to this one. Since they promise that I won't like the taste, I probably wouldn't try it.

I wonder how that marketing slant is working for them!

Like that beer a lot, and their other IPA's are quite good.

I'm not much of a beer drinker...I really don't like stout so this certainly wouldn't be for me.

Your title is awesome and it certainly did the trick of getting us to read!

While the "Arrogant Bastard" doesn't appeal to me at all, the assertion is a brilliant example of reverse psychology. I am convinced that it brought this company and beer much publicity and probably revenue. It certainly worked to get us talking about it! You've got to be bold to stand-out in that sea of craft beers. There are so many cutesy names, and artsy labels already, what else can be done to draw attention and be memorable?

It's great branding that grabs individuals attention. Working on branding is not simple to do but setting aside time to work on branding is a must. I do like this beer but not sure what I paired it with when I tried it. Great post!

An interesting take on push pull marketing. Imply the customer is not right and hope their ego will pull them into buying the product.

But you got to admit, the name is very catchy for it was the thing that caught my eye right away in your title. Now if it only lived up to its arrogance, cheers dears cvc

That's about the funniest thing I've read in a real estate column lately. I wondered if you had finally told the telemarketers what to do with all their insistent phone calls!

Myrl Jeffcoat, I do not know where to even begin with this  interesting post.  I can see where seemingly negative branding would catch my attention, however, I do not believe I would follow through and make a purchase.  Your humorous post was light enough and caught my funny bone.
