Part of a sound business strategy in a new year is to work on your networking and expanding your service circles. Attending leads group or social events can result in a lot of conversations. In Littleton property management we are always looking for the next vendor who may suite our needs or an owner looking to become an investor. Most conversation will be natural and end up with an exchange of business cards. Some may not be compatible with what you are looking for. At some point in the conversation you will need to leave, whether to grab someone else’s attention, you need to keep moving around the room, or the conversation stalls and becomes boring. Here are some ways to exit a conversation professionally.
The first step is to always have an agenda to follow at these networking events. Whether it’s tracking down 5 handymen, a consistent roofer or a seasoned investor, keeping to a schedule will keep you circulating the room. If you are saying this to who you are talking to, they will not take your exit personally. You can also use this as an opportunity for the person to introduce you to someone they know. If you ask them to do a personal introduction it will always take you out of the original conversation.
If possible, have a confederate in the crowd who can help pull you away. If you have a conspicuous signal you can flash them, it allows them to come up and whisk you away to the next person. If you are attending alone, simply wrap up the conversation using a summary of what you talked about. This shows you were listening critically and reassures them that you have valued the time spent. Express appreciation for the talk, and suggest an ongoing relationship. Request a card of their own and give them one of yours. Most people at these events are used to the drill, and will simply move on to the next as well. As long as you don’t force a halt in the conversation and keep your body language friendly, you will have no trouble at your next networking event.
