Happiness is a Choice

I’ve written motivational posts before about happiness. I’m a firm believer that others cannot make our happiness, nor can they take it away. We are in control of our own inner being - and that includes happiness.

Happiness is a choice - smile, smile, smile!

Making gratitude affirmations is a great way to reflect upon those things for which you are grateful. My guess is that many of them also make you happy. A good exercise to make you more reflective - and aware - is to list what makes you happy.

Now, reviewing that list, how often are you actually able to experience those things? Now, focus on ONE of those things - how can you turn it into a daily habit?

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks but, you can! It takes patience and, more importantly, the drive to make that change. Again, that drive comes from within.

Cultivate happiness

So, putting your drive to work DAILY on this one simple thought and doing so for 21 days, without fail, a new habit can be created. From there, building upon that same theory, you will be more successful turning negatives into positives. Thus, happiness will prevail in your life!

You do need to pay attention to the women in your life, brother Gene! You know we're always right and if we're not, it's best to act like we are! LOL

Seriously, 94 and doing well is all one needs to know how your mother lives her life. I have so much respect for people like that too!

I think happiness is difficult for a lot of people to define.  They don't know what it is or how to get there.  It is much more difficult than saying today I'm happy.

I do believe so much in being happy and strive to be of service to someone every day. I pparticipate in some local groups of like minded people to recreate. entertainment and learning.  Makes my heart sing!  Accordingly it is a national statistic that people being lonely contributes to illness and shortened life span.  So everyone out there who has friends and family to love you are so fortunate!!!

Hi Debe, I love your positive attitude and agree with you about the "choice"! Unfortunately, the majority choose to complain or even rant rather than look on the bright side.

I think humans are taught that life has to be hard. Who the heck came up with that rule?   It's as easy to be happy and it is to be miserable - in fact, I would argue happy makes life easier.  I appreciate this positive post, Debe, I needed one. D :)

Abraham Lincoln said “folks are usually about as happy as they make up their minds to be."

We have the choice, every day. The more days we choose happy, the happier we will become.

Gratitude plays a large part!

Honestly, Debe, I've never related to people who don't see that you can choose happiness regardless of circumstances.  Everyone of us has probably been to Hell and back more than once and, yet, we CAN choose happiness. Hell doesn't like happy people so if you show up happy they're going to kick you out of there as soon as possible.

Debe, When working with new licensees, there is often the challenge of keeping them positive in the face of multiple negative experiences on a regular basis. Doors shut on their faces, rude responses, losing out to a more experienced agent in a listing competition. It can be overwhelming. I ask them to look for the positives on their day.. the tiniest good things count. I'd the traffic lights stay green as they are hurrying to an appointment, or the sky is blue and the breeze carries the scent of jasmine.. whatever is good that day.. stop and verbally a knowledge it. I say, "Thank you, God", but whatever works for you. Doing it out loud is important. By the end of the day, you have acknowledged enough good things that the negative lose the power to defeat you.

Happiness doesn't depend on any external conditions, it is governed by our mental attitude.

A Definition I found on-line for what is happiness:

Happiness is that feeling that comes over you when you know life is good and you can't help but smile. ... Happiness is a sense of well-being, joy, or contentment. When people are successful, or safe, or lucky, they feel happiness.

Everyday, when I wake up the first thing I say is:  This is the Day that the Lord has made, I will Rejoice and Be Glad!
