Thankful Thursdays...for the Kindness of Strangers

This year I’ve been trying to take Thursdays to focus on my gratitude for things or people in my life.

What’s interesting is that it’s never a problem finding one thing I’m grateful for. I find that I have to choose one thing or risk having a post that is so long no one would read it.

Just the other day when I was out with my mini-me I was touched at how kind strangers can be.

There were strangers holding the door open for others at the fast-food restaurant we went to. AND, the people turned around to the door holder and said with a big smile Thank you!

I saw young children holding the door open for the people behind them and a teenaged boy who held the door open for mini-me and me.  And in turn, I held the door open for others.

There was a mom with three wee ones in tow and a woman offered to help carry her items to their table. It was lunch hour and busy and yet there were strangers there who were just doing what they do every day...they were being kind to others.

Our devices, social media, stores that deliver everything we need are making it so easy to remove human interaction from our daily lives.

Take the time to get out there and experience the kindness of strangers.

Whenever you're feeling lonely, remember that there are people in this world who bless every one of us before they go to sleep at night. They may have never met you, but their hearts go out to you. They are true angels. L.J. Kane

When I think of what I am grateful for it is always more than one thing and I love holding doors open for people!  I usually expect a thank you and find it interesting when the person doesn't even acknowledge, haha.  Oh, well, I will keep doing it since I don't do it for the thanks.

Kathy I have seen similar acts of kindness, and they seem to happen when they are least expected.

Your lovely post reminded me of the movie of A Street Car Named Desire.  The lead character Blanche Dubois, says,   "Whoever you are... I have always depended on the kindness of strangers".

Kindness makes us friends!

Hi Kathy Streib, there are many kind people if we have the eyes to see them. You are so right about being too involved with the technology but again, they will either open the floodgates or serve as tall walls when it comes to human interaction. The choice is ours.

Too often we are too focused on our daily agenda and are walking through life with blinders on - not intent on missing out on things, just forgetting to consciously look. It's been one of my goals for 2020 to walk through life with eyes wide open. Beautiful!

Wayne Martin those are the little things that make our day.

Barbara Todaro I believe the same thing. There are very few truly evil people in the world. If we smile at most people, they will return it.

Donald Urschalitz I believe you're right. Give them a smile and they soon will smile back.

It's true Nina Hollander if we let it, kindness will enter our world.

Roy Kelley it's becoming easier in our world to get through the day without every interacting with anyone.

Kat Palmiotti doesn't it make you smile when you see something as simple as another person holding the door open for someone.

Michael Jacobs I hope to take each nephew out soon.

Sharon Lee that is so true. There's a lot of mean-spirited people but I say kill them with kindness.

Joan Cox it's nice to focus on what you're grateful for.

Exactly Sheila Anderson if we stay closed off we can be missing so much.

Brian England for sure. There are times when I hold the door open for someone and they walk through without even a smile or acknowledgment. I sometimes want to let the door go so it will hit them on the behind.

True Beth Atalay we can't let it rule or govern us.

Andrea Bedard that's a very good goal to have.

A few years ago, our martial arts instructor had us do random acts of kindness to get to our next level...a lot of them!  I was a little leery at first, but it was a great experience.  The best, when I tried to do something nice and the person I was helping thought I had an ulterior motive.  It lead to a lot of laughter.  All the training I went through and that was the most useful.  I will probably never throw a punch for protection.  I continue to do something helpful every day, though.
