A Big Change with No Regrets
Endre Barath, Jr. is hosting January’s Challenge...What changes did you make last year or the year before that worked? Posts like this are always a good time to reflect on our own lives and also learn from the stories of others.
My journey of change began in 2018 when Larry and I made the decision to return to Houston after 30+ years away. With the exception of several years in Leesburg, VA and a few years back in Houston (all for work), the majority of those years were in Delray Beach, FL.
I would not have missed those wonderful years for anything but it was time.
Our core group of extended family was growing up and some had moved away. As in all of life, things changed.
It was time to move back to Houston to be closer to family. While Larry and I are in good health (more or less) we knew that as we age it would be better to be near family. And even though it is my family that is in Texas, Larry’s daughter, son-in-law and our two grandsons are in Omaha, which is a lot closer to Texas than Florida.
In December of 2018, we drove to Houston and began our search for a house.
We had these criteria:
Since being near the water wasn’t going to be a priority we looked for homes that were close to my family.
Knees being what they are, we wanted a single-story home or at least one with a master bedroom downstairs.
Traffic being what it is in Houston, we wanted to be in an area that would be an easy drive to our family and for our family to reach us. (Where we used to live, which was closer into the city, a 20-minute drive could have taken 45 minutes.
Lady luck was watching over us and we found a home 7 minutes from my brother and his wife and 2 minutes from her sister and her family.
We moved into our home in February 2019 and while I do miss Delray Beach, Atlantic Avenue and our friends there, I don’t for one minute regret being back with family. Larry and I have had the family for holiday dinners several times, celebrated the formal adoption of our dear Rafael, caught up with old friends, and yes, we’ve even done some babysitting!
Every so often it’s good to take stock of where you are in life because it’s so easy to keep going and before you know it...well you know!
