Are You a Know-It-All? Or Do You Have A Brain Trust?

By

As a real estate marketing professional, if you have embarked on what we call the “unabashed pursuit of market leadership” you are either an incumbent market leader or a challenger. To gain or sustain market leadership you need to be on the leading edge. And, that is why you need a “brain trust”. It is impossible to be a know-it-all. Those who claim to know it all from photography to videos are often jack of all trades and master of none.

Having a brain trust is essential because it is always a battle between incumbents and challengers. To be proactive you should have a brain trust to stay ahead of the competition even if no challenger is currently on the horizon. Things are rapidly changing, and as we read various publications it is evident that nothing in the world of branding/marketing is staying the same.

Presently, we have an enterprise level project to develop and bring to market. We have had to consult web developers and systems that can handle the volume of its function. We had to find designers that can do the latest and greatest graphic motions and test their expertise. After talking to several companies and looking at various software, we asked our current web developer to meet with them, so that he could give his personal impressions. And he will be our liaison to translate tech issuses for us.

Last week, we had a conference call with our web developer and our partner who consults us on search engine marketing and optimization. He is the leading expert in the field of SEO. He is a on the board of the second largest organization of SEO/SEM.  So, we continuously need to stay up to speed and pool our knowledge.

After, thanking our team of experts for the call, our SEO partner said, “this is the way it should be; we have an awesome brain trust, here”.   There is no way to stay abreast of all of the important topics on our own.

If market leadership is your quest, surround yourself with the best talent in your field. Get beyond trying to be a know-it-all and form a brain trust. One cannot possibly know it all in every field regardless of how big or small it is.

Will Hamm I have found that it is sometimes better to go out of a real estate network and into the real world.  After all the people who list and sell are not part of the real estate world.  They know much more.  A

Kathy Streib  I think what happens is people have their own agenda in mind, which means hanging on to every cent they make, and calling in an expert means spending some good money...So they do some research and get some surface learning, and assure they know.  A

Sheila Anderson I do think it is delusion driven by two factors, being cheap and researching enough to have surface knowledge, and the other is the fear of being judged by the peanut gallery for not knowing something.  A

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD exactly.  You reminded me of a real estate agent to whom I showed a listing on a building.  Her client liked the building, and they wrote a lease using  what at that time was basically a landlord favored lease, and her client signed it.   When I explained to her that this was not an offer but a binding agreement that her client's attorney should have reviewed, she went crazy.  She accused me of the world's crimes and called my broker (Ron) who backed me up, and called her broker.  I did present it to the building owners and they were ready to sign it and laughed at the ignorance of all parties.  Luckily the agent' broker was able to talk sense into her, and her client had her attorney back out thanks to a blank she forgot to fill out,  .

Nina Hollander that is definitely something that I notice.  Although I am knowledgeable in our field, I will on occasion refer to other sources and keep up what is happening.   We often ran into bloviators, like the contractor for the office building mentioned that the sound level of booths for a movie dubbing company would blow out the glass cladding of the building...He did not know how to build sound proof rooms...We ended up doing a study on decibels and their effects as well as levels.  Thank goodness we had the help of the sound guy for the Hollywood Bowl and other theater facilities in Los Angeles..This idiot was SO SURE of himself...A

Hello Ron and Alexandra Seigel, seeing some of the MLS pictures makes me cringe. I know I am not a photographer, so I hire a talent to tackle that task. Those who acknowledge the fact they can't possibly be experts in all have common sense.
