How do you survive and thrive in Real Estate?

There are two questions I get asked often. How could I have been in Real Estate for 34 years. I look so young. The second question is often "How have I lasted 34 years in Real Estate? The easy answer is I got my license when I was 18. Jumped right in while I was in college, and excelled.

For the other question, Active Rain has a challenge this month asking "What do you do year after year? What has worked? What have you done to improve your life? What have you done to improve your business? Please join me as I answer these questions.

"What do you do year after year? The short answer is to provide some of the best service to my clients I can. With an industry leaning towards discounts and less service, a segment Real Estate consumers is left behind wanting and needing more. I fill that void by using today's technology and old school great old fashioned service. Which is to guide them through every aspect of the buying or selling process.

What have you done to improve your life? The answer to this question is one that is evolving. In a business that some times calls for 7 days a week and 14 hours a day, one's life can suffer to make business better. In my older age, I have learned to block at time for my life. It is impossible to work at that pace. Exhaustion and burn out come easy. Blocking out time for my daughters events or games. Taking a couple of days off to go some where. Taking Sundays off. Many clients had not realized i had already worked 80 hours by Saturday night. It troubled me to find out how people would react if I was not available. It came easier with newer clients. It also came easier to tell new clients what time i would be available. Shutting the phone off from 9pm to 8am worked wonders. 9 out of 10 clients realize and accept this.  It has given me new energy and a renewed vigor.

What have you done to improve your business? I think one of the best sources for improvement of my business has been Active Rain. Meeting and talking daily to agents across the country has given me a new insight on the business. People willing to share. People who are nice and people willing to help. Most local agents are to busy competing and miss these points.

The MOST IMPORTANT message I can share is that all agents are not created equal. The choice of an agent does matter. Hire the agent that will work for you through each step of the buying or selling process.

I now share with every consumer that my philosophy is simple, provide more personal and professional service to guide my clients through each step of the buying or selling process. All Agents are not created equal and every buyer or seller should take the time to hire the BEST not just the biggest. Those that hire me, find a dedication like no other.

Hi Scott- it's clear from the posts you write that you are very concerned about providing over and above expectations with regards to the service you provide.  That is a big part of why you have survived and thrived so long.

I wasn't as young as you when I first became licensed.  However, I first became a Realtor in December 1981.  Interest rates were at a stratospheric 18 1/2%.  I was fortunate in that I had hung my license with a small Century 21 office that had about a dozen seasoned agents, who took me under their wing.  And, with a little luck, I prospered and grew.
