What Am I Interrupting?

 Interrupting

What am I interrupting?

That is the question when making a call to someone. If they are with a client, in a settlement, showing a house, playing with their kids, or watching Netflix, they can let me know and quickly hang up. My goal is NOT to interrupt your day. If you are occupied or don’t choose to talk, it’s an easy way out.

When asking this question, I’ve received some interesting answers. This morning I spoke with Lorrie Semler, REALTOR® in the Dallas area. Call/text 972-416-3417  Her response: I’m on the treadmill. But I will turn the speed down a bit, and she chose to continue with the call.

For those who are reluctant to initiate a call, not wanting to “bother” anyone ...the ‘What am I interrupting” question is a way to start a conversation.

Feel free to say you are busy or do not have time to chat.

Cold calling is NOT what I do!

I’m calling people I care about because I have something to share, ask a question, talk about their blog, or a comment made on mine.  I might be returning a call, giving a referral, or just calling my buyers and sellers to stay in touch.

After all, it’s only a phone call.

So no problem asking:

What am I interrupting?

I get your point Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland ... but like Carol Williams above, I typically choose to let the recipient of the call be the decision-maker regarding the appropriateness of answering the call.

I find so many times during the mortgage process, I simply cannot wait to place a call.  Time ... and necessity ... demand the call be made or the process does not have any chance of moving forward in the time allotted for successful conclusion.  Admittedly, this can be an uncomfortable position to be in as the caller ... and is.  And admittedly, I have to push beyond that discomfort often ...

Sometimes, to get the job done, you have to push past that discomfort! My question allows the recipient to talk or not.

That's a polite phrase to use...thanks for the tip!  I always appreciate it if a caller asks me 'is this a good time' or something like that.

Hi Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland , that's such a great way to bring in some humor in the conversation, asking "What am I interrupting?". I like it. I will see if it will come natural to me to use it some time.

I don't think I've ever used that phrase, but generally do say something along those lines. Perhaps "Am I catching you in the middle of something?" or "Is now a good time to talk?"

Love this and it's SO true, "Cold calling is NOT what I do!

This is thinking out of the box Margaret, a great way to diffuse a phone call. Your questions disarm those on the other end by letting them direct the outcome, letting them decide. You can almost feel their immediatte sense of relief on hearing they are not obliged to talk if not convenient.  Brillant.

Wonderful way to begin a conversation. And I also appreciate the fact that you are not long-winded. You are pleasant, concise, make friendly contact, and keep it short and sweet. You have a definite knack.

Hi Margaret, I usually asked if I am interrupting or "do you have a few minutes to talk". Although I find some callers (wanting money, selling leads, etc.) when I answer and say I am busy at this time.... continue to talk as if I've never said a word. Very aggravating!
