And the Sign Said

We drive by these signs all the time, so often in fact, that I don’t pay a lot of attention to them. This one, however, caught my eye as I pulled up to the stop sign. Between the leaves and the ivy, the meaning of the sign had changed.

Drive like my kids?

Hmmmmm   Maybe. Maybe not.

Think about the messages we send in our business. Whether it's an email, an advertisement, or a quick note, take the time to review it.

Does what we mean to say differ from how someone interprets it?

Outsiders might think our business is about sticks and bricks, but we know it’s about paperwork and communication. Get it in writing. Follow the rules of real estate for your state. Ask your Broker. Consult with a real estate attorney.

And if in doubt, have someone else read what you write before you hit “send.”

Great analogy.  Having a 17 year old driver in our house, I am definetly trying to not drive like my KID.   We tend to move fast in the real estate world, but it's so important to take a step back and double check our work and make sure we are putting our best foot forward.

Thanks! And since I had two teenage drivers in my house in the past, I can relate!

Hello Monica - good point.  An abbreviated message or one that is not clearly communicated can lead to all sorts of interpretations/misinterpretations.  Focus.

Communication is the key! As an Ombudsman, most of the complaints I hear stem from miscommunication.

We tend to read, see and hear what we want - not what is there.  Our clients, as a rule, do not have the experience and exposure of our profession.  it is important that we communicate clearly, concisely, without acronyms (pet peeve), and ask for a response to ensure the message was properly conveyed.

Acronyms can be so problematic! I agree with your sentiments, Jim!

Looks like somebody needed a long post for this sign. Maybe "Drive like your kids live here"?

Exactly. Sometimes the intended message is great but people don't think about the application of it. They've since realized that the message got twisted on the particular sign I saw and they've rescued it from the ivy.
