The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch
Opening Day is March 1, 2020
It’s that time of year again - the popular Flower Fields in Carlsbad CA will open to the public in 3 weeks on Sunday March 1st.
It’s hard to believe so many months have gone by since they closed and the fields turned brown. But in a few more weeks the fields will be gorgeous once again.
Be aware the Carlsbad Flower Fields take a while to reach their peak, so don’t expect the fields to look like this photo on Opening Day. But they truly are beautiful when at their peak bloom!
Check out my video from March 2015 below
The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch have been a popular tourist attraction for more than 6 decades, with 50 acres of brightly colored Ranunculas. It’s interesting to see the transitions during the year, from a brown dirt hillside to green plants, and then to vibrant colors, and then back again to brown dirt when the blooming season is over.
The Carlsbad Flower Fields are open for less than 3 months annually, from March 1st until Mother’s Day which is May 10th this year. So plan your time for several visits to enjoy the flowers and a wide array of events
Here’s some of what you can enjoy at the Flower Fields:
- Poinsettia display and an orchid greenhouse
- There’s a full calendar of events including Kids Day, musical events, arts and crafts, several Girl Scout Days, flower-arranging workshops, the special Mother’s Day Celebration on Closing Day, May 10th, and more!
- School tours and programs
- American Flag of Flowers on the south side of the fields – you can see it from Palomar Airport Road at Armada Drive by Costco
- Demonstration garden with ornamental and edible plants
Advance tickets are required for certain events.
You will no doubt enjoy walking through the fields to experience the flowers close up. Or take a ride on an antique tractor wagon ($6 for adults, $3 for children aged 3 to 10) to really appreciate the beauty of the Flower Fields up close, and it’s much easier on the feet!
The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are easily visible from the I-5 Freeway if you look to the east (if you are NOT driving, of course) at the Palomar Road Exit at 5704 Paseo del Norte (look for the windmill) adjacent to the Carlsbad Premium Outlets Mall.
Personally I think one of the best vantage points, and it’s free, is looking down on the fields from Armada Drive, with the Carlsbad windmill (now the Windmill Food Hall – check it out with 14 eateries), and 180 degree views of the ocean in the distance. I stop by often when showing property or going and coming to Costco.
You can purchase tickets on The Flower Fields website.
