Branding: Shopping Spree with Cherie and Me!

We were intrigued by this sculpture that was displayed at the Nordstrom's store in Santa Barbara.   Local artist, Lenore T. Hughes created a special Valentine's art installation for Nordstrom in Santa Barbara.

Here was her comment, "As easy and efficient on-line is now-and its definitely a big part of the present and future in shopping--I like to continue the in-person, shopping tradition of getting dressed up and taking my grandchildren to Nordstrom...the only big department store in town, for the fun of it all, to experience all the sensory pleasures we just don't get ordering in front of the computer screen in our pj's'"

The unveiling event was announced in our local paper, Santa Barbara Free Press, both in print and on line.  It brought people to the store at the grand unveiling last Saturday, and no doubt they were moved to shop.  For the artist is was a wonderful accolade from Nordstrom's and added to the brand's image: likability  caring, and great service for which they are known.

It made us happy that the store was featuring a local artist, and we felt for a moment that we may need to buy some heart shaped red glasses.  And no, they were not selling those, nor that heart shaped sequined bag.  Happy Wednesday.

Grant Schneider I love the store windows in New York, and in both Italy and France, the locals take evening walks and look at the windows of stores.  Last time we were there, it was still going on.  I always look forward to the display of artistry.  A

Myrl Jeffcoat I always think that is the job of artists---to take you on a journey, or remind me of something that was a part of your life.  I think Lenore Hughes did that. A

Nina Hollander When we lived and worked in Los Angeles, I had several ladies among the department stores that would take care of me.  It was a wonderful service to let me know about the sales and what came in that I would like. I like the tactile feeling and seeing it with my eyes in person.  A

Michael Jacobs Robinson's in Beverly Hills was a go to place also.  Now another residential develpment after years of this just sitting there.  They had me a deal with a British company, (Conrans) but that did not come to fruition.  We thought that it was the wrong place for them, and it took them years to realize that it was, luckily they did not start a build out..A

Michael Jacobs I remember that, and you are right about the Beverly Center.  Ron remembers it that a child, the location was an amusement park, where he rode ponies, and there were rides.  I remember when that land was acquired as well as the land across the way, and we knew both developers.  We sold many properties around there, and also had listings.  It was a hot area.. Hi Ron and Alexandra- as a long time shopper (I worked across from the Galleria in Houston...NM, Macy's...or as Larry calls it-The Mother Ship) I still love to shop in stores where I can see everything there is without having to click and scroll.

That said...I do have a wonderful relationship with Amazon.

Nina Hollander I have given 80% of my St. John's.  I have kept a few, but I have not worn them in ages...yes, they are on their way out too eventually.  And our local Nordstrom's stopped carrying them 6 years ago.  LOL A

Kathy Streib Funny, we call the Flagship stores the Mother Ship also.  We visited NM in Dallas, and I loved it.  I have only been to the smaller Houston airport, that is as far as I have been.  It is on our wish list...And Amazon does love us too.  A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel hi Alexandra... I have a carefully curated collection of St John's suits and I love them... they've stood the test of time. And whenever I wear them I still get tons of compliments. That pink suit I'm wearing in my picture is probably my favorite St John's suit of all times... and I loved it so much, I got one in black, as well. St John's continues to sell well here in Charlotte... then again, it's the south and women still do dress up more than in other parts of the country, I've noticed. I figure I'll be buried in my pink St John's suit :). Should I write that into my will do you think?

Nina Hollander I have clothes for places like NY and other locations back East.  Typically when we work with a client, we are there fot two days, based on flight times, etc.   We do dress for the theater or a performance, but many do not anymore.  There was a time when people dressed up to fly somewhere.  Now, you can also rent the runway for formal affairs as well as rent major jewelry pieces...Times have changed.  LOL A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel hi Alexandra.... I still see people dress up in Charlotte for theatre, ballet, opera events. And when Nutcracker rolls around at Christmas time... oh my... especially the little girls. I'll admit that when I fly I dress respectably but casually... no more business clothes to fly like in my corporate days, when it was expected by the company.

Morning Alexandra.

Well they sure look all dressed up and ready to do some serious shopping, but that's just half the fun of it.

Oh my, wouldn't it be easy to take those poodles home? And the glasses are wonderful, I can easily see you and Ron wearing those. I'm a big fan of Nordy's and hope the brick and mortar stores are around in the future. Shopping in person is still an experience for me. However, admittedly most of my shopping is done online. Portland traffic is too much of a deterrent.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD I understand that traffic is a deterrent, and I think that what happened is that too many retail places were built.  We were saying that when we were in commercial real estate. However, the experienttal wars are here, and Nordstrom's built a flagship in NY that I am told is magnificent...New York is a wonderful place to shop...A
