I'm not avoiding you...My dogs just don't play well with others.

I love walking my dogs, and I love my dog friendly neighborhhood but sometimes it's a huge challenge.  I have 2 adorable Jack Russell Terriers, Kirby and Chloe, who love to play with other dogs but not if they're on leashes.  Since we have a leash law in our town, they're always on leashes for our walks.

If you see me coming toward you with my dogs when you're out walking yours and I suddenly turn and go the other way, don't take it personally.  I'm not avoiding you.  I'm simply getting my dogs out of the way before they scare you or your dogs or just royally embarrass me.  If we continue on and pass you, they will pull, jump, bark ferociously and just about pull my arms out of their sockets to get to your dogs.  If I must continue on and pass you, you'll see me duck my head, hide my red face and walk as quickly as I can to get pass.

Fortunately, I also love walking alone.  When you see me out without my dogs, please stop to chat.  I really do like you.

Good afternoon Marian. I have four rescues and can relate. Luckily I have a large fenced in yard in massachusetts where I now live. I used to have this problem in NJ with my last two.

Marian, some of the dog walkers in my neighborhood have dogs like yours too.  Best to keep them apart.

Better to be safe than sorry. I've heard too many stories of owners having trouble restraining their dogs that ultimately get loose & go after other smaller dogs.

Hi Marian- what a cute post!!! My Brittany, when she was alive, was not good on a leash so walking her was a challenge. She wanted to say hello to everyone.

My Sweet Golden Charlotte was shy and got mad when other dogs came too close but totally fine watching others play on our puppy play Saturdays. Eventually, we stopped going when she had a fit.

No dogs here any longer, but I can definitely relate. We see altercations often when out walking along the beach - lots of people with dogs along the "boardwalk" and some are definitely protective.

Too funny! My husband and I were just discussing our last dog who barked viciously at anyone that passed our house (we had an electronic fence and wouldn't run out of the yard.)

The thing was, she was the sweetest dog on the block and every child of every age could walk up to her and hug her without concern. But you'd never know it watching her barking - unless you saw her wagging her tail at the same time!

Good evening Marian Goetzinger ,

Loved your post and so glad that Kathy Streib featured your post in her "Ah-ha" moments for the week! We have a leash law in our community and most people abide by it which is wonderful. Its just not worth it to not take the ordinance seriously!

Understand this all too well, been a while since I have had my own dogs , but walking my sons' dogs I know this feeling all too well.

I have a feeling my Katie would be the same - not playing well with strangers. She's fine when we see other dogs and even the cat at the vet's office, but when she's in the car and we pass a dog walking on the road she has a barking fit.

Since she weighs 100 pounds, I'm glad I don't have to restrain her!

Lucky for us she has plenty of acres on which to take her own walks, often accompanied by my son's dog. The two of them love nothing better than to blast out of the house and down over the hill, barking and chasing away anything that just might be there. (Sometimes that's wild turkeys and we're glad to have the dogs chase them away!)

I do a similar thing with my . He is shy and doesn’t like someone ( he doesn’t know ) to attempt to pet him ( until he is ready).
