The power of gratitude

You’ve no doubt been reminded now and then about the power of sending hand-written thank you notes.

Hardly anyone sends hand-written notes of any kind, so your thank you notes stand out in send hand-written thank you notesthe postal mail. They’re so rare that back when I had a real estate agency, I even got thank you notes for my thank you notes!

Tom Hopkins recommended sending 5 each day, even if you have to stop and think about who to thank.

I once wrote our local grocery store owner and thanked him for hiring such pleasant checkers and box boys. Those people make shopping a pleasure.

Tom Hopkins said to thank people for listing appointments, showing appointments, etc. With that in mind, I wrote a set of a dozen Thank You notes that you can either use as-is or as inspiration for personalized notes.

It's good marketing.

Sending thank you notes, whether to prospects, clients, closers, inspectors, or people you do business with outside of real estate, is a good marketing practice. It creates good will and makes you memorable.

Because receiving genuine thank you notes is so unusual, people tell other people. Note that I said “genuine.” A pre-printed note with a pre-printed signature is just advertising. I don’t know about you, but when I receive one of those it goes directly to the round file.

Just as an aside…

You don’t have to worry about this in real estate, but if you sell anything else as a side business, do be careful. I once purchased a recliner for my husband for Christmas. The store owner, who was known for both his thank you notes and his horrible handwriting, sent the thank you note BEFORE Christmas. And, being a somewhat unenlightened male, he sent the note to my husband instead of me. There went that surprise!

But back to the power of gratitude… it’s not ONLY a marketing tool.

It’s also a Law of Attraction tool. If you only give it lip (or pen) service, you won’t get the full benefit.

As you think about the people who will receive your notes, really think about them, and feel thankful for their business, their friendship, their service, and whatever they’ve contributed to your day.

It’s that feeling of gratitude that will lift your spirits and brighten your day. And, due to the Law of Attraction, it’s that feeling that will bring you even more people and reasons to be thankful.

Kat Palmiotti Any kind of hand-written note is rare, and thank you notes are memorable on top of it.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD Perhaps it was marketing (isn't everything) but that chimney sweep's wife was (in my opinion) rude. I wonder if she conveyed Bernie's thanks to her husband.

Hi Marte:

This is such a good reminder about the power of handwritten thank you notes. I enjoy sending them but could probably do a better job of being consistent, and sending more of them. Like Debb, I don't include business cards in my notes.

Jeff Dowler, CRS I've of two minds about the business cards. You do want people to know who thanked them! I guess it depends upon who it is and whether they would recognize your name. (Like when I wrote to the grocery store manager.)

Mary Hutchison, SRES, ABR I think sending birthday cards with a personal note is a wonderful idea. Everyone likes to be remembered - even when they're saying "Don't remind me that I'm a year older."

Usually the only birthday cards we get are from a dentist or perhaps a car dealership - pre-printed cards with pre-printed signatures. Big wow.

Thanks Endre Barath, Jr. - now I "get it." I've only read enough about them to know that their message is not one that I would promote. I didn't even realize that they were a father/son team.

I just did a Valentine's campaign, writing about 100 cards, to ask friends, past clients, etc. to help me grow my business by keeping me in mind for referrals. I've had quite a few compliments from my efforts.

This was an inspring post and comments - thanks Marte Cliff .    I've rarely written thank yous to other businesses, but I can see how it's a great idea to generate a continuing flow of gratitude.    I've recently begun studying the Law of Attraction.   I have to say, the response, well, it's actually catching me by surprise!  This year, I started a gratitude journal, and it's definitely helping me reframe my thinking.

Barbara Todaro Yes, we need to take time to express gratitude when we feel it - and we need to take time to feel it when we say it.

Anne Corbin That's a wonderful idea. My guess is you took considerable time to compose your message so that it conveyed your love/gratitude along with your request.

M.C. Dwyer My journey toward the Law of Attraction began many years ago, when someone lent me a  book by Florence Scovill Shinn. Since then I've studied many more teachers, and it all comes down to the basics: Be grateful for what you have - and what you expect to have. Fill your mind with things that please you and turn your attention away from things that don't. Expect good things.

I also found that starting a gratitude journal and actively thinking about gratitude every day brings about changes in your life - good changes!

What can we do for you today?

Saying thank you is very important indeed. When I and my husband go out for dinner, it is my tradition to say thank you writing a note on the receipt to the waiter and or waitress. The young lady could not read cursive writing and asked me what it said.  This was very interesting to me, read what was written on the receipt to her she said thank you very much.

Laura Filip You are indeed a kind and thoughtful person. However, your story makes me just a bit sad. WHY did schools decide they no longer need to teach kids to read and write cursive?

A friend sent me a series of cartoons today - all about kids not knowing how to operate books. Where do the batteries go? At the end there was a Q&A about sending messages in code: Just write them in cursive. Guess that would have worked with your server.

It makes no sense as to why the schools stopped teaching cursive writing, My children are 33 and 36 both can read and write cursive. Batteries in books what happens if there are no batteries available? A paper book is always good it never changes and you can read it over and over again. I have several that I have read two and three times.
