Motivational Monday… For a Better Future

Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen changes being made in the area where Larry and I walk...Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve. A large line of fence has been erected along the creek that runs at the edge of the Preserve.

Last week, we watched as huge machines began removing trees on both sides the futureof the creek.  I was so upset that our beautiful area was going to be ruined.

However, as Larry pointed out, they need to do it to prevent further erosion and make it easier to maintain. And hopefully, this will help to prevent the massive flooding that Houston experienced during Hurricane Harvey.

The slopes of the sides will be reconfigured and unfortunately, this means trees will come down.

It reminded me that often in life we face situations where we have to practice tough love.  We are asked to do the things that others may not like or that pain us to do but we know that they are, in the long run, better for us.

It happens in our professional lives as well as our personal lives. Sacrifices made to ensure a better future...doing what is distasteful to us now to prevent something worse from happening down the road.

While you go through the week and are faced with some of these choices, put on your Into the future glasses and let that help with your decision.

What would help us preserve our natural resources are genetic traits that let us sacrifice the present for the sake of the future. You need wisdom to sacrifice something that is immediately useful or advantageous for the sake of something that will be important in the future. Christian de Duve

Kathy,

Similarly, here eucalyptus trees came down after the fires.  They are very flammable!  They are not native to California and were brought in for lumber, and that did not work either.  Most of our fires would not have spread if folks had not taken out the native plants that nature designed as fire retardants.  A

Larry is absolutely right. Did you hear about the two houses yesterday in Western, TN that got completely destroyed because of the landslide? It was caught on video and on the news last night. Their homes overlooked the Tennessee River.

Hi Kathy I get this one!  2 years ago the path were we walk in the preserve had to be totally shifted. It was a pain having those big noisy machines digging stuff up for months on end, but I knew it was for the best of the neighborhood. When we get rain here it  pours into the backyards of the homes by the preserve. This had to be stopped!  And now, the path is better than ever!!

Hi Kathy Streib - We have had hiking trails changed due to mountain bike traffic.  Changes need to be made to protect the environment as you have seen.

Kathy sometimes we have to give up something we love in order to keep something we love.

Barbara Todaro I'm glad that Houston is and has been doing what needs to be done to prevent another Hurricane Harvey flooding.

Sham Reddy CRS I love that quote as well. Thank you for stopping by.

Nina Hollander I think that the term "tough love" is such a good one because it describes it so well.

Hi Wayne Martin it pains me to see all of the trees being knocked down but it does have to be done.

Donald Urschalitz That's a good point. Unfortunately with Houston's clay soil, when it rains, there's nowhere for the water to go.

You're right Michael Jacobs  Larry showed me what would happen if nothing were done. We can see what Harvey did to this area a few years ago.

I love your very positive point of view Brian England It's very uplifting.

Sheila Anderson we were there this morning and saw more trees being cut down.

Kat Palmiotti it's hard to see but since this area floods it has to be done.

It is Carol Williams that's what life is full of ...change.

Myrl Jeffcoat I hear ya!  If you look at the creeks, it needs to be done.

Excellent point Ron and Alexandra Seigel With our clay soil, Houston relies on its bayous and retention ponds to help with water runoff. If creeks and bayous erode, then trees and foilage fall into the water and prevent that runoff.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP I saw that last night!!! What a shame!!! I didn't even know the rains were that bad there.

Anna Banana Kruchten Broker/Owner, CRB, CRS it happens everywhere, doesn't it!!! I'm glad that your path has been put back in order!!!  What I worry about most is the wildlife and how they get displaced.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® at least municipalities are more aware now of what has to do done.

Kathy, it is hard to see trees being removed, but if it helps stop flooding, maybe for the best.

ah... Kickerillo  Haven't heard that in ages.  And 'slash pines'.  I really loved Houston's tall pine trees!
