Colder weather is starting to get further and further behind us and many of us homeowners are looking towards the spring, which means garden cleanup, landscape preparation, basic trimming, and mowing. But, what if you'd like to make a little bit of a change this year? Here are five easy ways to update your curb appeal whether you're looking to sell your home and want to attract buyers or just want a fresh, new look.
1. Paint or power wash.
Or… Maybe both? Take a look at your sidewalks, decks, railings, stairs, and anything that might need a good pressure washing and/or paint job. Take a walk around the house and look at the exterior of the home, window frames, siding, and any decks or patios. A quick power wash can help transform these areas without costing a lot but it may also be time for a touchup. Assess the gravity of the job and decide whether this is something that you want to do or hire out.
2. Add shutters.
Adding shutters on each side of the window as a fresh new look to the house. You could choose wood or vinyl exterior shutters to each side of the windows around the home adding a unique look and a distinctive look from your neighbor, especially if you live in a community that has very similar homes. This is an inexpensive fix that will add customization and charm to your home.
3. Focus on the lawn.
Is it time for a de-thatching? He thatching all of the weeds and moss the get tangled up in the grass is a great way to rejuvenate your lawn. It may look pretty sorry for a couple of weeks but once it's reseeded and starts to grow back fuller and better than ever, your lawn will be the envy of the neighbors. Consider putting a little bit of nitrogen on the yard, fertilizing it, keeping it trimmed, and when mowing, raise up the blade about 1 inch higher than normal. This will offer you a lush, green lawn longer between mowings. Should you lay sod or reseed?

4. Embrace symmetry.
Symmetrical patterns create focal points that are easy on the eyes and can instantly make the home look more put together. This might be wall lanterns or plants on either side of the front door or on either side of the garage door. Hanging plants, things that bring your eye up and out can really add to the overall charm of the house.
5. New front door or garage door.
Or both. You can easily update the exterior of your home by repainting the front door us dark complementary color the contrast nicely with the color of the house. Consider new hardware and kickplate as well. You can also repaint or completely replace your garage door which adds a dramatic look to the front of the house, especially if your garage door faces the driveway and the front of the house.
