Moving yourself and your family into a new home – whether that be local, interstate or internationally – is a momentous milestone. This time is filled with excitement and expectancy in anticipation of your new environment. The process of moving though unfortunately, can seem long and arduous. Endless hours of packing and organizing all lead to the big day, where in all your possessions as well as yourself will travel to a new home. Thus, the importance of laying out a clear plan of action is invaluable both prior to and during your move.
One Month to Go
The date for your move seems so close…yet so far away. This is the best time to sort out the logistics of your relocation and nail down the broader specifications. During this time, you should start developing a comprehensive list of the items you are moving. Doing this will allow you to work out what you’re tossing versus what you plan to take with you. Packing will be a breeze if you are able to make such an inventory.
Once you understand the items to be packed the next logical step is to decide what packing materials you need. There are a lot of things to consider when choosing how to package your possessions. Reputable removalist companies that pick up storage typically have a wide array of different boxes, wrapping and tape for you to choose from. If you have fragile goods, ensure they are packed in suitable wrapping like bubble wrap or crush paper.
Arguably, the most important step must happen next. That step is booking a removalist! Do your research, read reviews, ask for opinions, and go with the company that is best for you. Booking a removalist who is well recognized and has insurance contracts on offer is your best bet to ensure your treasures reach you safely. If you don’t plan to move all your items to your new addresses but would still like to keep them don’t hesitate to reach out to your removalist. Depending on what you are looking to store, removal companies can offer both long and short-term storage facilities at additional charge.
One Week to Go
Relocating is a mountain and you are nearly at the peak! With just one week to go it can seem to be that everything is in a flurry. Half of your items are packed away, and the other half (still in use) are scattered about the house. Now is the time to take a deep breath and remind yourself there’s still time to do it all.
Now is a good time to dispose of the goods you are not planning on taking with you. If some of these items are in great condition, why not consider donating them to a local op-shop. After-all one person’s trash is another’s treasure. If not, make use of local refuge stations, where you’ll be able to dispose of both general and green waste efficiently.
On the week of it is important for you to iron out any wrinkles regarding pre-existing commitments relating to your current location. At this time, you may wish to contact larger organisations that require a current address (e.g. Department of Registration, car insurance provider, etc.) and update your account to reflect your new address.
On the same thread, now is an opportune time to sort out your utilities at both you current and future address. There’s nothing worse than having no power at your new home when you arrive. You can easily avoid this by giving your utilities supplier a quick call and letting them know when to switch your house on. Additionally, letting your current utilities manager know when you’ll be leaving has the potential to save money that could be better spent elsewhere (perhaps on furnishing your new digs!).
Two Days to Go
Wow! Your move is so close, if you blink it’ll be over. Now is not the time to relax though! Over the next one or two days you’ll benefit greatly from doing a few easy tasks. The first of which is to finalise your finances regarding your move. If you need to make any compulsory payments prior to your move, now is a good time to do this. If your removalist takes cash on the day, make sure you have an adequate amount (particularly if you are being charged on an hourly rate).
It is much better to be over-prepared than under. Now is a good time to do a final checklist of the items you are looking to move. Double-checking and triple-checking will be your best friend. Go from room to room and ensure that you know the items that have been packed against those that haven’t. By doing this you can be certain that on removal day no item will be lost or left behind.
On a more personal note, now is a great time to start packing a ‘moving kit’. This ‘kit’ should include items like a first aid kit, a change of clothes, money, identification and any important documents that are best kept on your person. If anything goes wrong - fingers crossed it doesn’t! - you’ll be fully prepared.
Moving Day
It’s finally here! You are now within reach of the light at the end of the relocation tunnel. You’re so close to your new home. On moving day your property will be a hive of activity. That’s why it’s important to ensure a few things. The first of which is making sure the removalists have good access to retrieve your goods and park their trucks.
If you have any pets that may get in the way, ensure they are relegated to a place where there is no chance of their fluffy paws being trod on. Relatedly, if children are present make sure they understand that the removalists need to be able to do their job with ease, and without the risk of bowling children over.
Once the dust has settled and everyone has left, ensure you do one final check over of your property. If everything is fine, perform a security check – are all windows and doors locked – before riding off into the sunset towards your new abode.
