Instilling good habits with my partner in Naperville...

Good morning!

Since the start of the New Year, Ann Marie and I have indulged (over indulged?) in a steady stream of big breakfasts, fattening lunches, and delicious dinners prepared by Ann Marie…

When you combine that with the seemingly endless amount of social activities that she and I attend with their various temptations, we have both fallen a bit out of shape…

Although we are still both comfortable with how we look (she still looks awesome, but I am getting fat!), we recently have decided to take control of the situation, and both have begun a workout program…

No, we didn’t just run out and hire a personal trainer or join a gym. I have long known that lasting change takes changing our habits and the compound effect of those habits over time…

So in the last few weeks, as we settle down for our last few hours of the night, one of us always encourages the other to take those first small steps…

Ann Marie is now doing sit ups every night, and I have added push ups to my nightly routine…

When we are done, we take a few minutes to hold the plank position, knowing that the core is where we need the most work, and is so important as we both move on in our lives together…

Although we haven’t seen any dramatic changes in the way we look, I think we both feel better that we have started new, positive habits that will make an impact over time…

My hope is that we add additional exercises that we can do together. Maybe start with nice walks. Perhaps add a weekly yoga class or two into our schedule…

Bottom line is it feels good to be working on positive habits, and it feels even better to be instilling those habits with my partner…

Hi Ken - I take a 30-45 minute walk almost every night after dinner. That habit cuts down on my nighttime snacking, my downfall. I'll be adding strength training to my repertoire sooner rather than later. My planks are dismal!!

Good for you two. Diet is the big one - exercise is the icing on the cake. Sounds like a healthy habit change is working for you two.
