Coffee Grounds, Lemons & Garbage Disposals

As I am about to have my first cup of coffee today, I received an email from Baker Brothers, my local Plumber with some good information that piqued my interest. The headlines read:

DON'T THROW THAT DOWN THE DISPOSAL

Taking a sip of hot coffee, I read further. What caught my attention is something everyone would be interested in knowing:

"We see a lot of clogs or strained disposals as a result of misguided care. A lot of people think lemons or coffee grounds will take care of sink bacteria and improve the smell of the kitchen."

I don't know about you, but that got my attention! Over the many years of owning a house with a garbage disposal, I never thought about putting coffee grounds down the drain to go through the garbage disposal; however, I have put lemons down there and I don't recall having a problem... Or did I? Maybe I did and never put lemons and garbage disposals together thinking, that would be a problem. I read on....

"While lemons or coffee grounds may mask unwanted odors, both will cause damage to your disposal and drainage system in the long run."

Whoa.... now that got my attention! I do recall that I recently replaced my garbage disposal but I have no idea why I needed a replacement, other than to think, it was time. Plus, today, I couldn't tell you if I had put lemons down the drain to freshen up the kitchen at that time or not. So, now that I am fully alert, and not just because of the coffee I am drinking, I am curious and want to know more. I read some more. I confess to cheating on Baker Brothers to see what else I could find out about coffee grounds & lemons down the drain and what damage they could do. Bakers was right! So were the numerous other articles I found.

"The citric acid in lemons corrodes the metal components that make up your disposal. Coffee grounds while appearing to drain just fine, actually get stuck in the trap of the garbage disposal. The buildup of grounds will eventually disable the disposal and cause unwanted damage."

Now, when it comes to coffee grounds, I make a habit of mixing it into my soil in my garden beds. I heard from reliable nurseries long ago, coffee grounds attract worms which are great for the growing flowers in your garden. Which for me, has been very successful! In digging deeper into the world of coffee grounds and gardens, I learned that coffee grounds and worms make a great team because they decrease the concentrations of heavy metals in the soil.

I found other articles too, which has been helpful to understand why you don't put coffee grounds or lemons down your garbage disposal, including using the right coffee filters and why it is so important. In addition, I read articles about what you can use for a filter if you go camping and you don't have coffee filters, why I should think twice about popular Franchise Coffee Shops, and other topics of interest when it comes to coffee, coffee grounds, lemons, garbage disposals and drains. Whew! Homeowners and prospective buyers have a lot to learn when it comes to home maintenance. REALTORS®, like myself, other agents who are not REALTORS®, and consumers need continuous education. My second confession today is, I am a research junkie!

Have a nice day!

Barbara Todaro - When you stop to think about it, why wouldn't starchy foods clog pipes and damage garbage disposals?

Unfortunately, some times, mechanical things get no respect. And just like a car, we pay the price!

It's ALWAYS great to hear from you!

My friendly plumber chewed me out many years ago about putting stuff in my garbage disposal so I rarely use it.  Most of my vegetable scraps and coffee grounds go in my compost pile.  I like coffee grounds so much that I go to my local coffee shop and they give me all there used grounds!  Don't tell the Baker Brothers, but I do occasionally drop a lemon in the disposal.  It is a guilty pleasure! I love the smell of lemons.

Hi Patricia
I had never even considered putting lemons down the disposal. I have used baking soda to (theoretically) ward off odors.  I have put small amounts of coffee grounds in the disposal because I heard it helps keep the blades sharp.  I may have to reevaluate that practice. I have heard using coffee grouds or leftover coffee in the soil is good for plants. I know one should never put potato or onion peels down the drain. They turn slimy and can clog up the works in a hurry.  Pasta can get clogged up in the trap too.

Good moening, Patrica... well, this is news to me. I've often seen tips about grinding up a lemon to freshen the disposal... guess I won't be doing that any more. I throw my coffee grinds into the trash but admit I do rinse out what remains into the disposal. Oh well... also, eggs shells are not good to put down a disposal.

It certainly is interesting that a garbage disposal isn't as beneficial as we would think it should be, haha.  My thought is that it should grind anything and everything up in order to smoothly flow down the drain and to the sewer, but that is certainly not the case.

Raymond Henson, SRES, GRI - Your secret is safe with me. But your Plumber will remember what he told you - LOL

I honestly don't know how that rumor got started about throwing lemons into the garbage disposal but it has been going on for a long time. Now that we know, let's get the word out to others. Plumbing bills are not cheap!

Carol Williams - You might want to try ice cubes. They elimate odors. Better be safe than sorry!

George Souto - I think it is wise to avoid home repairs as much as possible. They are very costly and most can be avoided by following manufacturer and/or Plumbler guidelines.

Brian England - Garbage disposals are not blenders with spinning blades that chop food up. They have impellers, or lugs mounted on a spinning plate which uses centrifugal force to continuously force food waste particles against a stationary grind ring. Hope that helps.

I am taking a land management class, which includes all sorts of topics - septic being one of them. And they also said, don't put coffee grounds down the sink. I've never done that, but do remember reading something years ago that advised TO do it. This is good info!

Kat Palmiotti - Taking a land management class would be very interesting! I took Geology classes in IL and the subject of septics and aquifers, brown fields, and underground storage tanks was most fascinating to me. I would take Geology again, if it was offered in my area. In TX I have seen lots for sale where old automotive shops were torn down. I thought about brown fields a lot when I saw the land for sale.

Who knew there were instructions that came with the use and disposal of coffee grounds!

So far the class has covered soil, septic, fire prevention/season, forest management. I can't wait to see what's next!

Kat Palmiotti - Fire prevention/season and forest management would be of high interest to me. Did you ever see the movie (based on a true story) "Only the Brave," about AZ Hotshots who fought forest fires. I saw the movie and read the book twice.

It sounds like a wonderful class! And I like that you are enjoying it too.

How interesting.  I guess I'll stop grinding up the occasional piece of lemon - but it sure makes the sink smell good!
