Oops Not For Sale

Real Estate Broker/Owner with HomeRome Realty 410-530-2400 311291

How would you react if you found a  FOR SALE on a big white post on your lawn? Very official, brokers name, rider, and all.

My dear friend, bill, received a call from a neighbor, hurt and disappointed that Bill would list their home without telling them first.

 Not For Sale

Bill and his wife called me to share this situation. They sent me a photo of the massive, intrusive sign. This couple is more than friends I’ve known him since he was ten years old, attended his bar mitzvah, their wedding, was with his parents at the birth of his beautiful daughter, and sold them their house more than 25 years ago.

I immediately called the agent with the errant sign. She answered laughing with an “I promise I’m not trying to take your client away.”

It was a mistake. The house numbers were the same but not the street. They even had a photographer come to photograph the wrong house.

My friend had already called the number on the sign, received an apology and an offer to make it up to them.

By removing the signpost, filling the hole in the yard, and maybe even a bottle of wine as a peace treaty. She went on to tell them how much the neighbors were listing their property and asked if they were thinking about selling.

That's when my friend brought up our relationship.  When they sell in the near future, it will be my sign on the front lawn!

Hello Margaret - yes, mistakes can happen.   It's not the end of a story.  Just another chapter in a lifelong adventure.

Good morning Margaret. Sometimes people can't help themselves. They will do anything for business and then deny it! It is a shame. Enjoy your day!

Mistakes do happen! Last year when we visited our Montana property, we found a for-sale sign on a tree in front of our bottom meadow. WHAT? I called the agent and she had not read her mapping tool correctly. She came and removed the sign. Phew!

WOW! I never had this happen. It's a good thing you stay in relationship with your past clients and they know who to call, regardless of any real estate question or situation.

I would not be happy about that other agent's mistake. I like the comment by Wayne Martin too.  Land lots for sale can be hard to identify; but not when it comes to a residential home with people living inside.

HI Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland - This is what gives our industry a bad name. If it was a mistake, (I highly doubt it...) that agent went too far when they asked for future business.

I had a misplaced sign occur once as well.  It made for a little laughter, when the wife of the house where the sign was planted, called her husband at work to ask if he was unhappy at home and wanted a divorce!

Mistakes do happen. However, unfortunate that the agent had to add her "soft close" with them.  I find that a bit tacky. IF they wanted to sell, they would obviously be able to observe how she handled their neighbors sale. IF impressed with the results, they might have used her. IF, they weren't great and loyal client/friends of Margaret Rome.

Well that was pushy of that agent to suggest they might want to list with her.  Of course your clients turned down that offer.  Why would they hire anybody else with you on their team for years.
