Buy for Where You Are Now, Not Where You Hope to Be
It happens in the best of families...even in mine! When you’re buying furniture and accessories for your home, are you making decisions and buying for where you are now...or where you hope to be?
As is often the case when a home stager
or agent meets with a seller who is ready to sell their home, one of the first things they see is too much...too much furniture, too much stuff, too much extra stuff.
Part of the Too Much is the oversized furniture that many homeowners buy for their next home...one that will have more space which translates into larger rooms.
One of my favorite clients had been hoping on someday moving to her larger dream home when she moved into her current home. So all of the furniture she purchased was meant for her next home.
After 10 years, she and her family were ready to move into their larger home. However, in trying to prepare her home for sale, all of her rooms looked cramped and small because of her for-the-next-home furnishings.
To add fuel to the fire, after 10 years, the homeowner and the rest of the family were tired of the furniture they had hoped to take to their new home.
Take note...
A study in 2011 showed that the average homeowner stays in their single-family home for 13 years. First-time buyers stay on average 11 years.
Here is why you want to buy furniture for the home you are in, not where you hope to be…
Your tastes in furniture may change by the time you move.
When you look at your furniture now, given the opportunity, would you rather have something totally different?
When a good friend moved after 15 years in the same home, she chose a style that was so “not her” we were all pleasantly surprised.
Styles may change
Classics will always be around but there’s always some tweaking.
Sofas usually last between 7-15 years depending upon the fabric as well as other factors.
If you have pets or young children, by the time you move, you may be happy to get rid of your old furniture!
Your next home may not have that large room to accommodate your larger furniture
Life takes us down paths we may not expect...we decide to right-size or we decide the house we really love doesn’t have that large room.
No one wants to feel as if they have to invest in all new furniture and accessories when they move into their new home. So when you’re furnishing your new and current home, find what works for IT!
