I've talked before about all the different factors that go into good SEO, which include but not limited to original content, word count, images, keywords, keyword density, authority, and the like, but backlinks and internal linking make up a huge piece of this puzzle. You know how they say different factors make up your credit score and how some components are heavier than others? The same goes for SEO. Internal linking has always been important but it seems that within the last few years it has gotten a bigger piece of the puzzle.
So, what is internal linking and how can you do it correctly?
Internal linking is exactly what it sounds like, it's linking something from one page on your website to another page on your website. The links are internal meaning the root domain is the same. External linking would mean linking a word or phrase outside of your website to a completely different domain.
What should I link and how should I link?
You should have at least one internal link per 100 words and at least one to five external links per article depending on the links. This is not an absolute checklist, but more of a guideline. If something is related and you have a page on your website that talks about it, link to it. You could do linking a variety of different ways but as long as you link to other pages on your website, you keep people on your website longer and you provide more information and authority, making this page even heavier. - Read more about how many links to have per page
Craig Daniels did an excellent article on linking and how you should do it so I'm not gonna go into a lot of detail here but you should definitely go over and read that article if you haven't already. His gift for creativity and visual appeal when explaining something is unmatched.
But, basically, internal linking should open either in a new window, tab, or in the same tab as long it's to your own website. If you are linking away from your website, which is perfectly fine, always make sure that that link opens in a new window or a new tab. You don't want people to leave your website.
Some websites allow you to make the external link "no – follow" which means that when the Google bots scan your webpage they won't follow that link to its location. If you want them to follow, say going to another one of your websites, then definitely don't check the box marked "no follow", but, only WordPress and some custom websites even have this as an option. In general, have external links open in a new tab while internal links can open in the same tab as long as you are keeping people on your website for the information for which they came.
So what's the best way to use internal links?
If you have more information of value that can add to the article that you are writing, that's when you should put in an internal link. Here is an example:

This article talks all about a lowball offer so anything and everything on your website that is related should be in this article. I have linked the main keyword 'lowball offer' in the heading and added an external related link at the end of the paragraph. Throughout the article, I have linked to contact pages, about pages, home pages, and related posts as much as possible. Sites that have more content to choose from are far easier than when you're just starting out. But anything that adds value to the article is seen as a positive SEO tactic.
Naked links are even okay if they are natural. Just throwing in a hyperlink for the heck of it really isn't SEO-friendly but you could easier say at the bottom of the article: For more information, follow me at http://www.MatthewKennedyRealEstate.com This would be an example of a naked link.
AND - if you create posts in the future that related to a past post, go back and update that post. There is value to adding information to previous posts as well.
So, don't negate the power of an internal link. Posts and pages would almost be worthless without them. Take the extra time to find related content, even if it isn't your own. For example https://parklandpowerteam.com/home-buying/helpful-move-out-and-move-in-cleaning-checklists/ This is a great post with several internal and external links adding value for the website and value for the reader. Take the extra time to include some internal links and your page value will soar.
