Monday Musings: Making Friends With Silence!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Napa Consultants DRE00893924

One of the guests at our dear friend's birthday party was a gentleman we had known when we all lived at the same apartment complex in Brentwood/Los Angeles.  Our friend has maintained his friendship with him.  At present he owns a private business guiding groups on Safari in Africa.

He had noticed that his guests were usually very busy with their still and video cameras taking photos of the wildlife, and not really enjoying or savoring the moment.  He wanted his guests to experience Africa, not just have great photos!

During the journey, he tells the drivers every day to stop the jeeps. He then asks his guests to put down their cameras and recording devices, and to just be quiet and listen to Africa!  He guides them to breathe in and  smell the air, feel the wind in the savannas, and listen to the sounds of the Mara Masai Reserve.  .

The drivers look forward to this moment in the journey.  Like the guests, they enjoy the silence and the inner stillness.  When the guests pick up their cameras again, their photos and videos results are infinitely better...

When you become aware of silence, immediately there is that state of inner still alertness. You are present. You have stepped out of thousands of years of collective human conditioning.

Wishing you a great Monday!

Take a moment to be still and remember,

One finds the anchor of the Universe

Within Oneself."

Hi Ron and Alexandra- this one hits home with me. I'm learning to put my camera/phone down so that I can enjoy what is...what is out in front of me and what is around me. When we used to go out on the boat and Larry and his friends were diving, I drove the boat. I loved not having any music on just so that could hear the waves around me.

Kathy Streib I enjoy taking pictures, however, I have realized that I can miss stuff.  For instance when we went on a whale trip, I was so darn busy with the newfangled camera, that I was missing the excitement.  I put it in my purse and hung out with the whales, the sea lions, the dolphings and the sea birds...A

This is wonderful! What an awesome way to experience a safari. I'm sure it's something the guests all remember fondly.

Your friend is very wise: "just be quiet and listen to Africa!"

I think the adiction to cell phone cameras is interfering with the inner voice that needs to be silence so that it can hear.

I truly love the sound of silence.  It is soothing to the soul.  Terrific quotes.

The sound of silence is one of my favorite companions.  Toss in a beach along with it, and it's all the better.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP I think that the cell phone replaced whatever was blocking the inner voice in the first place.   Thank you for commenting. A

Morning Alexandra.

Exactly, it is one of the reasons I get up so early every morning.  I can experience the silence, no TV, no talking, etc.  Just me and my computer, dancing in the Rain

It sounds like a lot of the sporting events will have to learn the beauty of silence as well.

I really enjoyed this post. My bride and I recently stayed at an ocean side inn in Del Mar for her birthday. We snapped many photos of our view. But as we came down to 2 hours before checkout, we both without saying a word, met on the balcony and held each other and took in the view. 30 minutes of drinking it in with little to no conversation. It's what I remember most of that 24 hour celebration. At least once per day, I'm resolved to  "just be quiet and listen to Africa!"

Love this...we have a herd of antelope that travel across our property. When we first moved in this summer I was darned and determined to get amazing photos of them so that I could show everyone. I got a few ok photos... but I finally stopped grabbing the camera and just watched and enjoyed them for myself.

Christine Wade - Real Estate Virtual Assistant I know just what you mean.  Today, I took a few shots at the sea rookery (birth area for our seals in town) and then just watched them.  There are 46 new pups...more to come.  Nature is so lovely.  A

Thomas J. Nelson, Realtor e-Pro, CRS, RCS-D, Vets what a superb story you shared with your bride, nothing like being ocean side.  We often walk on the beach and most of the time we are silent...just the sound of the waves is magical.  Wishing you and your bride a delightful Sunday,   A
