Cleaning our Naperville garage on a Sunday afternoon...

Good afternoon!!

Yesterday (Sunday) afternoon was one of those gorgeous days in early spring that make the winters in Naperville seem worthwhile…

It was March 8th, the temperature was over 60 degrees, and there was endless sunshine

Just a gorgeous day to be out and about…

After a busy morning filled with a church service with the kids and showing homes to a new buyer, Ann Marie and I returned home and discussed what we should do with the rest of this beautiful day…

“Let’s get out of the house!” voted Ann Marie…

We considered our options, which consisted of going to a park, walking to Downtown Naperville, or cleaning out the garage, the most challenging yet overdue of our options…

Given the weather was gorgeous and there was cold beer in the refrigerator to incentivize me, I voted for cleaning the garage, and Ann Marie agreed…

So we went to work…

Our garage was filled with clutter and junk, only leaving room to park one of our cars. Boxes filled with who knows what, chairs, old furniture, various lamps and paintings were just a few items that filled the space…

Piece by piece we removed EVERYTHING from the garage, and filled our driveway full of the “stuff” that we all collect in life…

I have discovered over the years that the accumulated stuff we carry around really has a cost. It weighs on one mentally, clutters the space, and just causes stress as it is always on the back of my mind to take care of…

So, after about two hours of work, with a few breaks to sip my beer and revitalize our enthusiasm, we had cleared out the garage of all the big objects, leaving dust, leaves, spider webs, and random garbage needing swept up and disposed…

The process was so cathartic. It felt great turning a cluttered dirty mess into a usable space, and throwing out tons of stuff that we were never going to use…

After another two hours and just before darkness, the piles had been sorted, and we returned the objects we deemed worthwhile back to an appropriate and organized spot in the garage…

Parking both our cars in the garage was our mission, and our mission was accomplished. In reality, however, we received more…

We both had an accomplished feeling of a job well done, and had a fun afternoon to as well…

Cheers!!

Ken

Ken Tracy - What a great way to take a very important step when it comes to spring cleaing. Starting with the garage allows room for cars to be parked and you get rid of things you don't need. Your discovery about what stuff costs you was a great aha moment. Obviously, the cars have the most value and shouldn't be parked outdoors for useless objects you don't need with minimal value stored safely indoors. I like how your brain thinks!

Good morning Ken. The days of organizing the garage of my single family home are over, but I remember those days well. Enjoy your day!

Good morning Ken Tracy, many who live in FL use their garage as a storage area as we don't have basements.   I seldom see cars parked in the garages.
Time well spent on a Sunday!

Hello Ken - Spring Cleaning can occur anytime and it typically feels so much better when that task has been completed.  Before or during the process... perhaps not so much.
