Today Is Friday 13th... Are You Suffering From Paraskevidekatriaphobia or Friggatriskaidekaphobia?
Today is Friday 13th! Are you superstitious about Friday the 13th? Is this just another Friday for you? Or is it your lucky day? Or is a day when you'd rather hide under the covers in bed all day? Have you ever wondered about where these superstitions come from? Did you know that some 21 million Americans admit to having a fear of Friday the 13th? This fear ranges from mild anxiety to full-blown panic attics!
So many people have a fear of Friday the 13th it's actually got not one, but two official names... Paraskevidekatriaphobia and Friggatriskaidekaphobia! If you're wondering why... Frigg is the Norse goddess whom Friday is named after and triskaidekaphobia means the fear of 13. It's also known as paraskevidekatriaphobia, which is based on the Greek word for Friday. And while I have no fear of the day or the number 13, I do have a fear of trying to correctly pronounce or spell the name of this phobia!
"If you think Friday the 13th is scary, try going a day without coffee. It's horrifying."

How Often Does Friday The 13th Happen?
Every Gregorian calendar year has at least one Friday the 13th, but there can't be more than three Friday the 13ths in any given calendar year. The longest time one can go without seeing a Friday the 13th is 14 months. The good news for those who fear Friday the 13th is that in 2020 we will have only one more Friday the 13th (in the month of November).
Just so you're prepared... every month that begins with a Sunday will have a Friday the 13th in it. If January 1 of a leap year falls on a Sunday, the months of January, April and July will each have a Friday on the 13th. In the 20th century, this happened in 1928, 1956 and 1984. And in the 21st century this will happen four times in 2012, 2040, 2068, 2096.
"Don't be superstitious. Nothing will happen on Friday the 13th that cannot happen on Saturday the 14th."

Looking Back At Friday The 13th In History
Did you know that there were no negative (or postitive) associations with Friday the 13th before the 19th Century? And if you look back in history, you'll find instances of where people and cultures considered the number 13 unlucky, while others thought it lucky. The number 13 aside, it was not historically linked with a day of the week like Friday. So the origins of the fear of Friday the 13th remain a bit mysterious, although, historically, Friday was a day with negative connotations stemming from Christianity, most likely, because Christ was considered to have died on a Friday.
